We all know how daunting just thinking about starting our own small business can be, much less for those of you who have already taken the plunge and find yourselves in it, trying to give it an honest go. On the one hand there are times when we feel nothing short of terror at having walked away from the security of being an employee, but on the other, when we think excitedly about having our decisions, our time and our days and our futures be our own, we gain a vague sense of the true freedom, individuality and potential that we secretly known has been there all along.

My aim is to encourage you to qualify these instincts, feelings, sensations and thoughts that are collectively known as your intuition, establish them as real and to help you relate these to the very unique and personal creation that is your small business.

Many of you will have followed your intuition in the decision you have made to go into business for yourself and will have recognised it as your inner yearning to have' more of your true self. Whether this involved turning your hobby of soap and candle making into a business or becoming a self employed chartered accountant, one thing is undeniable. You knew that you deserved to have a bigger, richer, freer experience of life day to day and hurrah! Congratulations were in order as step by step you were able to follow your instincts and put things in motion! Eventually your outer environment changed to reflect these changes within yourself.

Now that's done now what? You may or may not have developed your entrepreneurial skills earlier in life but whatever skill set you've brought with you, you're probably finding that you've had a steep learning curve in trying to become familiar with all the other skill sets needed to be a successful owner in small business. After all, apart from your products and services there are the mandatory organisational, administrative, bookkeeping, marketing and public relation aspects to consider.

This is where honing your intuitive skills and gaining some serious clarity and understanding of your systems can become invaluable! Our small businesses are such a close match of who we are, as with our relationship with ourselves, it's unbelievably easy for us to not be able to see' clearly the real issues at play. And this is especially true in the areas in which we find ourselves struggling. Have you ever found yourself in a bind with a certain customer or supplier who managed somehow to get under your skin to the point where the thought of them fills you with dread? What about that pile of bills, filing and correspondence that's been on your desk (or on the floor, or in a box, or on the back seat of the car) that you can never seem to get around to tackling?

What these things do is tie up our resources impeding the free flow of energy into each aspect of our business and this in turn affects the optimum functioning and our enjoyment of our business as a whole.

A better way for example, to handle difficult customers is to first gain an understanding of what it is they really, really want. Sometimes, this has little to do with your product or service and much, much more to do with where they are in their lives. With a little insight and compassion, you might be able to give them a spot of the acknowledgement and validation they might be desperately seeking. You might be surprised to see them soften and be able to see things through different eyes...all because you took the time to understand the communication that was really happening rather than judge or resist it. What a gift to be able to give! Not only is it gratifying for you to be able to consciously take your communication to another level and in the process make your life easier, but this is the type of customer experience that sets your small business miles ahead of the competition.

So yes, intuition is a nifty little tool that we can use to evolve our businesses with a greatly improved understanding of the dynamics that are happening beneath the surface. Stay tuned for more on how you can start growing your awareness of exactly how close a representation your small business is of YOU and use this to increase your havingness' for greater enjoyment, freedom and success.
