A very common eye health complaint involves swelling around the eye, mostly in the lids. Although there are different reasons that make lids become swollen, but in most cases the cause isn't too severe. Once a doctor has specified the cause, these minor complaints generally are corrected at your own home.

Usual causes of puffiness are allergies, not sleeping well, and unnecessary salt. Not as common, an infection, disease, or long-term health concern sometimes have localized or general swelling surrounding the eye.

Usual Reasons

Allergies: During an allergic reaction, eye often become watery or dry and scratchy, and red. The lids can puff up, increasing any irritation. Use a cloth moistened with cool water, or cool compress, near the eyes to get down the swelling, and either take medication to reduce allergic symptoms or keep away from the cause of the allergic response.

Poor Sleep: Less sleep than needed, broken sleep (waking often during sleep), or sleeping too long can cause swollen up eyelids. A cool compress is just the thing to ease swelling.

Extra Salt: Extra sodium in your system will cause you to retain fluids, which leads to puffiness of the lids as well as different parts of your body, like hands and feet. Moderate warmth applied to the swelling will help the unnecessary fluid leave your skin cells and get back into your blood.

Other Causes

Styes: Styes (Hordeola) are an infection. Bacteria that commonly exist on the skin invade the shaft of an eyelash, making the shaft to get plugged and the skin near it to turn puffy and red. Frequently the swelling makes a yellow center. Styes are normally painless if left alone and generally clear up by themselves. A warm cloth can assist clear the infection sooner, or your doctor may order antibiotics if indicated.

Mononucleosis ("kissing disease" or "mono"): Mono is a viral infection that can produce swelling in the glands, fever, and exhaustion. A cool cloth may bring down swelling of the eyes and soother the fever both.

Hypothyroidism: Hypothyroidism is a condition caused by the thyroid glands inability to work right. There can be many reasons for hypothyroidism, and swelling in the lids is frequently caused by fluid retention in the skin. Using a warm cloth can help remedy swelling.
