Ever wondered how to make money writing fiction? It's a common question. When you hear about the millions of dollars that many bestselling authors earn, it's natural to wonder how you can turn your own love of storytelling into a profitable venture.

In this article, we'll cover three essential steps you'll want to follow if you're serious about making money writing fiction. Implementing these tips isn't necessarily easy, but if you're willing to put in the time and effort, you can achieve your dreams.

1) Write a compelling story in a popular genre.

Being well-paid for your fiction writing efforts begins with creating an engaging story in a popular genre. This may sound like basic advice, but many would-be authors routinely ignore it.

Don't write a fictionalized story about your life. Don't write in a genre that hasn't been popular in over fifty years. Sure, you might be brilliant enough to find success by disregarding both of these suggestions, but the odds are against you.

Study the national bestseller lists and look for trends. Select a genre that you enjoy reading in your leisure time. This is where you should make your stand.

2) Get a good literary agent.

Finding a good agent is about as difficult as landing a major publisher, but it's essential. A literary agent will market you and your novel to editors and help you get the best possible deal.

Where can you find these people? Look online. Attend writers conferences. Ask published authors for recommendations.

Whatever route you choose, keep this in mind: the best way to land an agent is to write a compelling, marketable novel.

3) Secure a contract with a major publisher.

In our current age of self-publishing on the Internet, many would-be writers avoid the onerous task of getting a deal with a big-time publisher. While self-pubbing has its advantages, in most cases, you'll make a lot more money writing fiction by securing a traditional book contract that pays an advance, and royalties.

How do you get such a contract? Sign with a reputable literary agent.

Which leads us back to the first tip: writing a marketable novel that readers can't put down.
