Often times couples find himself in a mundane relationship and don't know where to turn. They don't have the type of problems that require counseling but they no that there is something not right. Here are some tips that can help you make a successful marriage.

FRIENDSHIP: This one one thing that most successful couples have going for them. They treat one another with respect and discuss everything. They treat each other as individuals and don't feel threatened when the other talks of their feelings.

DATE NIGHT: All successful couples have some time that they set aside just for each other. Many couples use date nights as a time to be together as a couple to relate as a couple and to open up the communication and get closer. Time together can really help to bridge the gaps in your relationship.

TIME AWAY: Most successful couples balance their marriage with some time for self. Whether this is time that is spent with family and friends or out doing something they love, that their spouse may not find appealing. Doing this helps keep a healthy balance in the relationship allowing each partner to be separate for some time. This is only helpful if each person is taking time for themselves, and if it is not abused and does not exceed the amount of time designated for their spouse each week. Otherwise, this type of activity may do more to harm than to help the marriage.

SHARING: Working together as a team is another important aspect to a successful marriage. Split up household chores, stick together when parenting, work on finances together, take on challenges as a team, and make decision together. These are great ways to work as a team and help you stick together in good times and in bad.

UNDERSTANDING: Understanding that your spouse is not always going to be perfect is another key to a healthy relationship. If your spouse gets short with you because of a difficult day or problems at work, having the understanding and compassion about these situations without taking it personally really helps. Living with a person day in and day out, they are bound to take some of their problems out on you, but work to try and open up a dialogue to help your partner deal with the actual issues at hand.

Communication is the MOST important thing for every marriage. If you find that you and your spouse are unable to successfully communicate with one another consider taking a course on communication or books out of the library. This will better assist you with opening up the lines of communication between you and your spouse.

Seeking marriage counseling is not only for the weak. Everyone goes through marital problems at some point. Check out lightyourfire.com for helpful tips on how to make your marriage work.
