Does being a generalist freelance writer have disadvantages? Yes it does, and in helping you decide which one you would like to go into, here are a few disadvantages to think about.

1. You are not looked upon as an "expert" in your topic: As a generalist writer, you may be perceived as having general information on a specific topic; this can play against you because you may not have insider knowledge that is required on that one topic.

2. You will need to do extensive research to gain more information: You may have general information on the required topic you're writing about, but you will need to go beyond that to turn in a well written assignment for which you are getting paid for.

3. You lack the credentials of an ‘expert' in a specific area: Many Buyers may turn you down because you lack the credentials of an expert in an area they may be looking for. A publisher may be looking for a specific "pet care" or "self-help" writer.

4. Your portfolio is too general: There is no substantial proof that you can specialize in a specific topic in depth and detail.  For example, the topic of "pet care," can you go beyond the surface of pet grooming and write about parasites?

Depending on your preferences as a freelance writer you always have the option to experiment until you find your niche. As with any type of writing there are advantages and disadvantage and you are encouraged to check out both sides.
