Just minutes from downtown New Haven is a charming Irish restaurant that prides itself on creating an authentic old world atmosphere. As you enter Duffy’s Tavern you can’t help to be charmed by the manager’s friendly smile and endless effort to remember a small detail about your last visit. A haven for Irish expats and locals of every kind, most regulars grab a draft of Guinness or a Smithwick’s and enjoy the charming decor of the Irish pub’s rich oak antiques and turn-of-the-century oak woodwork that adorns the barroom and dining areas. Warm Irish cues like the shamrock-colored walls lined with traces of wainscoting, and art-deco ceramic floors emphasize the attention to detail. Rich oak woodwork highlights the elegant antique bar with vintage handcrafted tables and chairs, and an old-fashioned beer coil cooling system.

The menu is a bevy of daily specials, steaks, chops, veal, chicken, and pasta, in proportions that demand a doggy bag. Flurries of appetizers alone are enough for a meal with room to focus on the extensive beer and wine list. Not to mention the newly added gourmet martini menu. Menu highlights include County Cork Favorites like the Leg O’ Lamb ($13.95) sliced thin and served with mint jelly and the Veal Jameson ($16.95) sautéed tender veal medallions topped with mushrooms in a Jameson’s Irish Whiskey sauce. If you just want to enjoy the atmosphere while enjoying cuisine other than traditional Irish the Chicken Francaise ($14.95) tender breast of chicken lightly battered and sautéed in a lemon, wine, and butter sauce is highly recommended. If that’s still not enough Duffy’s also offers Duffy’s Nachos ($7.95) that will give any regional Mexican restaurant a run..

I would like to see a few more traditional Irish favorites like Guinness Stew or Shepard’s Pie but the friendly manager and the atmosphere are enough to keep me going back for years!
