Acronyms can be fun to use and are an easy way to remember concepts and short sayings. But, what is an acronym? An acronym is a word created by using the first initial in a string of words.  Used in the strictest sense, it must create a word. The use of acronyms is everywhere, so it's not surprising to find the use of acronyms in Recovery Circles as well. Here are just a few you may find useful or may hear. Recovery doesn't have to be all doom and gloom, and giving you the heads up will help place you ‘in the know' and feel more ‘in the loop'.

Heads Up On Twelve Acronyms Used in Recovery Circles

1. EGO: Edge God Out

2. FEAR: Forget Everything And Run

3. GIFT: God Is Forever There

4. HALT: Hungry Angry Lonely Tired

5. HOPE: Hang On Peace Exists

6. HOW: Honesty, Open-mindedness, Willingness

7. KISS: Keep It Simple Stupid (Sweetie)

8. NUTS: Not Using The Steps

9. SLIP: Sobriety Lost It's Priority

10. SPONSOR: Sober Person Offering Newcomers Suggestions On Recovery

11. TEAM: Together Everyone Achieves More

12. PACE: Positive Attitudes Change Everything

The list may be truly extensive, but these are just a few most commonly used acronyms you may hear in support groups. The use of acronyms simplifies the way people communicate in their recovery program, especially useful in a support group meeting where suggestions are brought out to help someone deal with a problem or a crisis. For example: Someone may say they feel like they will relapse, and someone may respond with, ‘Are you NUTS?' What that person's actually asking is "Are you Not Using The Steps?"

Acronyms serve their purpose in many areas of life, and thankfully in the Recovery Circle as well.
