One of the greatest gifts in life is a child, though it requires an enormous amount of work. If you have a special needs child, the difficulties can be greater, as can the rewards. Parenting any child requires a delicate balance of loving guidance, discipline, support and patience. Many parents put their all into their role as a parent, and with this comes a lot of worry. Most parents worry if they are doing the right things and this is a very common, normal part of parenting.

Those parents with a special needs child sometimes face a more difficult challenge. There is so much guilt associated with parenting and especially with a special needs child. When you are told that your child has any disability, or handicap it is easy to fall into the trap of feeling guilty. There is an important factor to consider however. A different perception of the special needs child is important when beginning to evaluate your parenting style. Many special needs children become spoiled. This is not meant to offend any parents or child, because it is said with all the love in the heart of any parent. Parents don't mean to spoil their children, but those with special needs appear to be so helpless and disadvantaged, it is easy to make this mistake.

I know that this may sound harsh, may even make you mad, however from my own personal experiences I have found that too many people underestimate the abilities of those with special needs. This is not just parents either, but caregivers, educators, and those involved in any way with the care of these individuals.

Their process begins from birth and don't believe for one second any doctor, teacher or other professional who tells you what the limits, life-expectancy or deterioration rate of your child will be. And if they want to tell you anyway, find someone else who believes that the power that they hold inside is completely unlimited. Expect good behavior, positive results and successes. Don't get discouraged, don't give up, and don't ever assume that they have attained all that they can in this world.

No matter what anyone says, don't compare them to others. Just allow them to be their own unique individuals with the unlimited powers that all individuals possess. Encourage them to reach for the stars, and don't ever give up hope. No one knows their limits so expect success and you will see it.

Children bring about the greatest joy and the greatest challenges in life. Parenting requires a careful blend of love, patience and discipline. Visit the parentinginformed site for helpful parenting tips and helpful advice every parent can use.
