Think Attention Deficit Disorder is just for kids? NOT SO! Thousands of people have Adult ADHD symptoms and don't even know it...
Did you ever feel "not quite right?" Although nothing was seriously wrong in your life, something inside was impossible to ignore--sound familiar?
Not long after my marriage, I started feeling "wrong." Everything was fine, I was making a good living, I had the man I loved and yet, there was this "feeling." It was an uneasiness, restlessness and sadness I didn't understand. I hadn't heard of Adult ADHD yet.
The thoughts in my head came through at blinding speed. Partial sentences, observations, quotes, songs and distractions filled my head. I couldn't remember from one hour to the next what I had planned to accomplish. I felt horrible. These were common Adult ADHD symptoms, but I didn't know it. The frustration and noise in my head became unbearable, and I called a professional psychologist I knew. I felt afraid and alone and I told her "I think I'm going crazy."
I tried to describe the noise in my head. "It's like there's a party going on all the time. I feel lazy and stupid," I explained, sure she was going to commit me to some kind of institution.
Instead, she said gently, "This is the first time in your entire life that you have peace in your daily routine. There is no drama, no mystery, fear or concern for your safety."
II pondered her thoughts and realized she was right. From the time I was very small, there had been many obstacles, challenges and "dramas" along the way to distract me from the thoughts in my own head.
But not these days. Everything was fine, and I was worried, waiting for the drama to continue --waiting for something bad to happen. It seemed like it was almost impossible for me to place my focus on one thing at a time and the overwhelming feeling made me question my own self-worth. I felt stupid, and alone.
"What's wrong with me?" I asked her in frustration.
"You have ADHD symptoms. I think you might have Attention Deficit Disorder. Adult ADHD," she said, matter-of-factly.
"Isn't that for kids?" I exclaimed.
"No," she said quietly, "There are thousands of adults like you who have Adult ADHD symptoms and have gone undiagnosed. There are some tests that can be done for Adult ADHD. Also, I'll recommend a few books you can look up on ADHD symptoms."
I browsed through the bookstore and immediately found the books on Adult ADHD. As I looked through them, I began to recognize ADHD symptoms and think of things that had been said to me growing up -- things like:
Pay attention.
Why can't you sit still?
You just have to "buckle down."
Do your clothes belong on the bedroom floor?
Why do you leave half-finished cans of soda all over the house?
Why can't you put things away when you're finished with them?
Why do you leave the kitchen cupboard doors open?
I would later learn that asking "Why?" all the time was a sign of ADHD symptoms.
Can you relate to any of these things? For many people, the answer is "Yes!" If the thought of having Adult ADHD makes you feel depressed, angry and frustrated, don't let it. The important thing is to find out if you are dealing with Adult ADHD, so that you can plan a coping strategy to overcome your ADHD symptoms.
How would you answer these? --
Are you often late for appointments?
Do you feel like you "just can't get your act together?"
Are you disorganized?
Do you procrastinate or have trouble getting started with projects?
Do you have many projects started, but few finished?
Are you easily distracted?
Do you seek out high energy or high stimulation situations?
Do you count items like sidewalk cracks, birds in the sky or items on a shelf?
Do you have a tendency toward addictive behavior?
Do you dread "the details" of a project?
If you find yourself having difficulty with any of the Adult ADHD symptoms outlined above, you have a gift -- you just haven't learned to use it yet. People with Adult ADHD think in non-linear ways.
Awareness and acceptance of who you are is the first step to working with Adult ADHD symptoms. Congratulations! See below to find out how to use your ADHD gift to your benefit...
