The newest Wilco CD, entitled Wilco, has been released just in time for the wake of the fans excitement about the bands DVD Ashes of American Flags. Ashes of American Flags is a DVD of live footage from the bands 2008 bus journey across the US. It gave fans a great look at not only the band, but also the US, and left them wanting more.
Since I am a long time fan of Wilco I was, especially their albums over live performances, I was worried about all the controversy when Warner Bros. rejected the submission of this album. Along with other fans, through emails and letters, they became aware that more of Wilco was what wee wanted.
This is their seventh album, so it is a little hard to believe that anyone could doubt the reputation that they have made for themselves, but that is the business that they are in, sometimes it is not about the music you play, but who you know. In any case, after a slight delay, this, their seventh album, shows not only their talent and musical ability, but the maturity of a comfort with the music that you can feel from the first track to the last.
Many thought that this self-titled album would be a wild mix, similar to that of Yankee Foxtrot Hotel, however, it is more heavily influenced by pop music of the 1960s and 1970s with songs like Sunny Feeling, and You Never Know making it more similar to the more traditional sounds of Sky Blue Sky.
The sound of this new album are the best yet. There is a mix of guitar strumming, big choruses and incredible slide guitar sounds, along with their first ever doubt "You and I." Although similar sounding, every track has it own uniqueness that makes this band hotter then ever.
