How important are baby shower cakes? A baby shower party with no table cake centerpiece may have you regret ever having made the decision not to have one, and disheartened guests regretting this decision too. C'mon future mommy-to-be you have to have a baby shower cake. When women ask about cakes for the occasion they usually have good reason for this, and the most common includes the issue of money dictating the (shall I, or shan't I have a cake.) Stop there, cakes are affordable and even more affordable if you bake it you're self.  Cakes don't have to be expensive. Remember, costly baby shower cakes are no tastier than the cake baked on a budget. Expense rises due to additional extras added to your cake. What difference in taste does that extra edible rose bud or whirl of cream make? Nothing, other than cost you more money

Baby shower cakes are very much a part of a baby shower party, and without cake then it's very much not like a baby shower party. Nowadays women tend to order a cake decorated specially to match their own personal requirements, this could include mummy or daddy's name pipe creamed on top of the cake, choice of colored candles even toys. Cake is a delight to eat, "fact," so why not make this baby shower party extra delightful and add a theme to the event.

As soon as the word baby is mentioned, money is involved, whether it is to dress them, feed them or whatever. It is good for mum-to-be in control of her finances when planning a baby shower party. You have been planning in advance haven't you, naughty – naughty if you haven't. Making baby shower plans in advance can save you a lot of time and money and headaches, which come later when baby is growing up..

Baby Shower Cakes

Make sure you know what type of cake (fruit sponge chocolate whatever) it is you have decided on having for the occasion before walking into the bakers to place your order. This can cost you dearly if you don't. Is flavor important, you're telling me it is? Why else would somebody spit something out from their mouth, yes it may well be because it's hot, but more likely the reason is because it tastes crap. So yes flavor is important. It is worth considering a plain sponge fancied up with cake decorations. You have more chance of pleasing the palette with a plain sponge cake than one that is rich and fruity which is displeasing. If you get the ingredients to the cake wrong then have a spittoon sit in the corner of the room.

Baby shower cakes and diaper/baby cakes' what is the difference? The baby shower cake is homemade or bought from the confectioners, while 'diaper cakes' are not for consumption but more a piece of décor. If you're looking for a creative centerpiece idea for a baby shower other than a cake, then create a diaper cake. It will appear on the table as a cute centerpiece and is a much more practical gift for the new baby. Although toy storks, cuddly bunnies and cherubs are sweet and appealing, they won't be of much use after the party has come to an end.

Usual supplies for a diaper cake centerpiece:

  • Disposable diapers.
  • Platter to create on
  • Ribbon for tying the rolled diapers
  • About 8 feet of 1" wide ribbon for finishing tiers if layers are your preference.
  • 1 tall baby bottle.
  • Small candies to fill the baby bottle.
  • Adhesive tape.
  • Assorted baby items like pacifiers, teething rings, combs, brushes, rattles, bibs, etc

Is there any difference between a homemade baby shower cake to one baked in the bakers? No not really other than the satisfaction of having baked the cake you're self. You should shop for baby shower cakes well in advance…because bakeries are normally busy with other orders for weddings and birthday cakes. Your chosen flavor and ingredients should be listed down to hand to the baker (Marzipan, currants, sultanas etc)

Make this day extra special and exciting by doing something different. If you're stuck for ideas you can go online and get all the help and information you need on cake baking or other. Check out nutritional cake recipes while browsing on the internet or look for recipes on the most traditional like chocolate, marble, yellow, carrot cake, orange-chocolate, black forest, almond or mocha.

Make your own baby shower cake which will look like this at the start and then "can"  look like below
To start you off you could purchase a round cake from the shop or bake a simple sheet cake. When the cake is cool, and not before, you can begin decorating the cake base with a variety of frostings and fillings such as
  • Custard
  • Whipped cream
  • Jam
  • Peanut butter
  • Chocolate
  • Jelly

Plastic umbrellas, storks, bassinets, baby bottles etc make fabulous cake decorations. Consider making different cake shapes (round square or rectangle.) Or if you feel confident enough create theme-related cake shapes like a train, doll or animal figures.

Basic Lemon Sponge Cake Ingredients

  • Zest from 1/2 lemon
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted softened butter
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons warm water
  • 1/2 teaspoon real vanilla
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 2 cups cake flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Put the sugar and lemon zest in a blender. Blend until the lemon zest is fine. Add mixture to softened butter. Whisk with a mixer on medium until fluffy.

Beat in the eggs one at a time to the sugar and butter. Add the water, lemon juice, and vanilla. In a different mixing basin, use a whisk to mix the flour, baking powder, and salt. Add half of the flour mixture to the rest of the ingredients. Mix on low. Then add the rest of the flour mixture.

Blend at medium speed until the cake batter turns to sheen…turning white at the same time. The longer you mix the batter, the more air bubbles you create which results in the cake being more light and fluffy. Pour sponge cake batter into cake tin/s previously greased.

Bake in a preheated 350 degrees Fahrenheit oven for 25-30 minutes. The sponge cake should pull gently from the sides. It will be golden in color and spongy to touch. Test the center with a toothpick if it comes out clean it is cooked.

Take the sponge from the oven and let cool for 10-15 minutes before removing the cake from the cake tin. Let the sponge cake cool fully before frosting and adding your cake decorations How simple is that, now go and do baby proud and put those oven gloves on.

Once the baby shower cake is positioned as the centerpiece and you have conclusion on preparation before the guests arrive, then remember this is not the ending but the sweetest beginning for the future parents.
