New threats appear every day so you have to have the latest version of the program to ensure maximum security.
If you are only running free anti spyware then you really should use more than one program. That means you have continual coverage and security every time you access the internet.
Effective real time coverage is one of the major options missing from most of the free versions of better quality anti spyware. Paid versions allow it for a given period but then you have to upgrade the software to obtain a licence and benefit from total security. But even free software is better then none.
You will need to use the software to scan you system on a very regular basis as free anti spyware isn't as effective as paid programs. However as long as you do use them often they can be effective in reducing spyware infections to the bare minimum.
The main problem you will face with all free versions of anti spyware programs is spyware that they can't deal with. Some Trojans and adware can be very difficult to remove and then you'll have no option but to buy the software to remove the problem.
I would always advice everyone to purchase an effective spyware program instead of relying solely on free anti spyware. There are excellent solutions available at an extremely reasonable price that will help to eradicate the problems almost completely.
