I have a long background of studying spirituality and metaphysics. Many of the giants in those fields teach detachment as desirable and even holy. Some even go so far to insinuate that attachment is wrong or somehow sinful.
I don't agree with that at all. Yes, I understand that its not healthy to become emotionally dependent on a person or circumstance. But other than that, attachment can be a good thing and can even move your toward your dreams and goals.
Attachment is by definition a bond or feeling of affection for a person, idea, place, or object. It is a necessary part of the human experience because without it relationships could not form and progress would not be made.
If a parent for example felt no sense of attachment to his or her child then what reason would that parent have to nurture or care for the child? If an inventor had no attachment to his inventions then there would most likely be a lot of unfinished projects cluttering up the shop.
So what is healthy attachment? When you're excited, charged with energy and feeling joy then you have a healthy attachment. This can be directed to a person (feeling in love), idea (inventor working on new invention), place (your favorite fishing hole), or object (exhilaration when driving that shiny new car). It's also possible to be attached to events or circumstances like taking pride in your work, an event you're working on, or a project you have personal involvement in.
This kind of attachment is constructive, gets things done and moves humanity forward. It helps you achieve your dreams so that you can live a happy, fulfilled life. So go ahead and get attached. And enjoy the wonder and delight it brings to your every day experience.
