In the late 1960's, after the invention of the first working laser, a researcher named Endre Mester attempted to prove that exposure to laser lights caused cancer. Curiously enough, the mice he used did not contract any such illness, but rather showed signs of quicker hair regrowth after exposure. Today, decades later, low level laser therapy is used by some as a method for men's and women's hair restoration as a safer alternative to hair transplant surgery and medication.

Low Level Laser therapy (LLLT) is conventionally used as a medical tool for healing wounds and soft tissues. Recently, it has been approved by the FDA as a tool for both men's and women's hair restoration. While some doctors remain skeptical, others use the procedure frequently and claim it produces amazing results.

The way LLLT works is by the application of laser rays directly to the scalp. This results in chemical reactions that release energy and cause metabolic changes. The procedure claims to increase overall circulation to the scalp and promote the growth of hair follicles. Most of the success of this procedure is in promoting the growth of healthy hair and it does not seem to be as effective for women's hair restoration in cases where a lot of hair has already been lost. In the end, LLLT is exactly like any other women's hair restoration procedure: it will work on some and will not work at all on others.

The bad news is that the procedure usually costs more than $500 and there is absolutely no guarantee that it will work. Although the treatment is FDA approved, this does not mean that it works. All that this approval signifies is that it is not a harmful procedure. The real risk in trying it is financial as well as emotional as it can prove quite a disappointment if there is little or no improvement.

There are still some very convincing advantages to LLLT for women's hair restoration. The most notable plus is that it is a painless and noninvasive procedure that will not leave any scars or even marks. Many patients report reading a magazine or having a chat with the doctor as the procedure is being executed. Studies from Europe have shown that LLLT can stop hair loss in 85% of cases and can stimulate growth of new hair in 55% of cases. The amount of growth stimulated varies greatly and it seems that LLLT can be effective if used early on in the process of women's hair restoration.

There are numerous specialists that you can consult who can tell you what the best options are for your particular situation. The causes of hair loss vary greatly and the method of women's hair restoration that you need should be specially suited to your physical and personal needs. LLLT is certainly not a miracle cure, but it is another option on a list that is quickly growing. It is indeed comforting that the issue of hair loss is being taken seriously by medical professionals and that new ways of effective treatment are constantly coming into the public spectrum.

Hair loss in women can be a difficult thing to deal with. If you're experiencing hair loss or have questions, the best thing to do is to keep yourself informed and learn as much as possible at RestorationOfHair.com , where you'll find lots of free resources on dealing with women's hair loss.
