Before paving block works commences an inspection of the area should be carried out. Its important to check the earth work tolerances, sufficient slopes for drainage at least a minimum of two percent. Also ensure correct levels to allow the finished paving to tie with the rest of the buildings or manhole covers. Another item to consider is the edge restraints like road kerbs, channels for drainage and if main building works are complete.
Once the parking or driveway is ready for paving blocks laying select the pattern, shape, thickness, quality and color required. Confirm the earthworks for levels and compaction. Select and erect the necessary edge restraints or kerbs. Place the bedding materials and moisten the base.Lay screeding rails on the sub base for making levels. Spread the bedding sand between the rails and smoothen with a screeding board. Fill all pockets with two passes using sand.
As the paving blocks are laid ensure bedding materials reach the kerbs. Remove screed rails and make level the pockets. Commence laying the blocks from the lowest side, using string lines to check levels and slopes. Continue in a right angle and work outwards with three millimeters gaps block spaces. Measure and cut edge pieces and compact using a plate compactor with at least two passes. Check for levels and adjust as required. Sweep jointing sand over laid blocks.
In driveways or parking's laid blocks should be swept thoroughly with sand to fill all joints while running a plate compactor. This is used to vibrate and run sand into joints. Fill edge joints with concrete if they are twenty five percent less than a full block. Its done when compacting is finished. Edges or rod kerbs should be dry before laying any blocks as they could easily give way due to compaction. Once work is complete sweep off excess sand and debris.
