Sean Penn has and is improving with age. Way back in the Madonna marriage era you never really thought he would amount to anything other than a bit player or a supporting actor. But as time has progressed through movies he has done, he has shown the more fluid aspects of his acting range talents. This most recent release to DVD is a feather in his performing cap for sure, his skills and believability really show through in this movie. He really has come a long way.

Harvey Milk was the inspiration for this film. He really did exist. During the 1970's he lived in California and held a position is an elected official. The fact that he was openly gay is what makes this so interesting. This is the 70's and gay rights was just starting out, and he manages to get in and stay in office. The movie is all about him at ease and at work and although it is 30 years later these same political issues are important today.

Penn does a great job in this role. He smiles a lot, as did the man he is portraying Harvey Milk, and quite honestly, I have seen pictures of the real Harvey Milk, and Penn looks stunningly like him in this film. The amazing thing is that Penn still looks young, allowing him the ability to play roles of younger men, with the wisdom and experience of an older actor, making his performance in at least this film darn near flawless.

This drama will really take you back to the 70s and the feelings of these retro characters seem as real as your own. A moving film, and not one just for the homosexual community but for all who appreciate a good drama, with some action and shockers thrown in.

Everyone has an issue that they can understand people fighting for. It is an admirable thing to do. This movie is about fighting for what is right and not all about Gay issues. If you like those type films that are based on fact then you will want too see this. Within that genre it is a must see, it's that good. It brings back the seventies in all their glory with people that are relevant today. Whether a youth or an old timer everyone will like this movie. It is a good one to get on DVD because seeing it one time is not enough.

For a great drama about life get the Harvey Milk DVD available now. You will enjoy the seventies throwback feeling of the Harvey Milk DVD and the performance by Sean Penn is incredible.
