With the wonderful selection of cute baby items, it's easy to go overboard on baby nursery decoration. That's why it's important to plan your baby nursery decor before you begin shopping. Your idea list will help you stay focused and guide you in what nursery decoration items you need and in what color. Along with your baby nursery decoration scheme, there are five practical things to consider in making the room the best it can be for your newborn baby.

1. Think about the baby's rapid development. Babies grow so quickly. To save on baby nursery decoration costs, choose furniture that will evolve along with your child, such as a crib that turns into a bed and a changing table that's also a dresser.

2. Keep an eye on lighting. When planning the layout of your baby nursery decor, pay close attention to lighting in the room, especially where the sun shines in throughout the day and where street lights shine in at night. From there, you can position the crib away from direct lighting and work your other nursery decoration items around it. In choosing lighting to go along with the baby nursery decor, balance the primary overhead lighting with lamps that emit a gentle glow. Other practical baby nursery decoration lighting ideas are nightlights and lamps that play music.

3. Choose a baby nursery decor that's appropriate through early childhood. To avoid having to continuously update the nursery decoration as your child grows, choose colors and themes that are age appropriate. That means staying away from pinks and blues or baby themes on the walls. Instead, use accessories to give the room that baby look and feel since they can be removed and new ones added as the baby grows.

4. Use practical flooring. While wall-to-wall carpeting is a popular choice for a baby nursery because it is quiet and warm to walk on, it collects a great deal of dust and gets dirty and stained quickly. More practical flooring that is easy to maintain and doesn't cause allergy problems is hard wood or cork. This type of flooring is also a good nursery decoration because area rugs can be added to complement your theme and can be changed as your youngster's interests develop.

5. Allow for plenty of storage space. They might be small, but babies need lots of storage space for clothes, shoes, diapers, accessories and toys. In fact, space will always be needed, especially as your baby grows. There are many ways to incorporate storage space within your baby nursery decoration scheme. If there isn't much closet space, buy a few decorative containers, chests and baskets. Shelving is ideal for holding books and other special mementos.

Practicality goes a long way in creating a baby nursery decor that is comfortable and functional for you and your baby. As your little one grows, practical baby nursery decoration practices make it easy to adapt the room to changing interests without spending a lot of time and money doing a complete makeover year after year.
