With greater emphasis on environmental issues, coupled with the ever increasing popularity of mobile phones, there appears to be a slight conflict of issues. Even devout green consumers utilise mobile phones, but all the while appreciate the harmful effects disposing of them improperly can cause.

With the jumble of metals and plastics that go into creating the modern mobile phone, disregarding them at the end of their life into landfill can be extremely hazardous. Technophiles and technophobes alike are continually embracing the latest designs, often replacing them at the end of contracts or when there's becomes horribly outdated. But what becomes of these old warn out handsets?

Fortunately, those with an ecological conscience can benefit from one of a number of schemes to recycle old mobile phones. You needn't be left out of pocket either. Many of these projects now offer a reasonable amount of money in return for your old device, giving an added incentive to what is a fantastic and much-needed innovation.

Even when we have grown tired or have replaced our old mobiles, they can still have a use. Whether they can be repackaged and sold or stripped down for their components and accessories, very few mobile phones are ever beyond use. Even if yours has met with a horrible accident and is well beyond saving, there are still recycling options available to you. Okay, you shouldn't expect any financial reimbursement, but at least you can be safe in the knowledge that your mobile will be properly disposed of, rather than decaying for decades in a landfill.

One of the most damaging elements of a modern mobile phone are often the chemicals used within the batteries and other component parts. If these are improperly disposed of then they can potentially pose a significant threat to their surrounding environment; particularly if found with numerous other similar handsets.

Mobile phones should be treated like any other kind of waste when it comes to disposal. Many of us go to great lengths to filter our recyclable material from regular waste; the same should also be true of your old phone. Disposing of it should be done in the most ethical and convenient way. Fortunately many places, including many council refuge tips, will offer a straightforward way of ridding yourself of a mobile long past its best days.

It can be like saying goodbye to an old friend when you finally get rid of that old phone you've been carrying around for months and months. Of course, some will be more cherished than others, in fact some you'd rather just see the back of as soon as possible. But whatever way you do decide to part company with your phone, ensure that it is the right way.

If you are looking for more information on companies that recycle phones and those who offer financial rewards for those that are still in a reasonable position, the Internet is a great place to start. There are thousands of sites offering advice and also giving you the opportunity to send in your mobile in exchange for cash. You can also locate local recycling centres and refuge tips, who may also be able to provide a safe resting place for your old mobile phone.

Written well, Derek, but would be of more value to the reader if you included a few links of places that accept old phones. I have heard of an organization that takes old phones and gives them to battered women's shelters to distribute for emergencies.
