Genital Warts - Am I right in assuming you or someone you know have spotted some sort of genital acne or experiencing soreness around the vaginal area, and think what you feel or spotted resembles what you believe to be genital warts? While you may be right, you may also be wrong, nonetheless it is best to be cautious and check these things out.

Lets address the issue of genital warts so you know what they look like, and why they may have occurred. Before going further this is just an insight on the condition, and not a suggestion you have them. It is the place of your GP to give a diagnosis.

Genital Warts is a viral sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV) which is usually passed on during sexual intimacy. Genital warts grow in the clammy tissues of the genital region like the vulva, vagina, and cervix in women, and in men, on the tip and/or shaft of the penis. They can also develop around the anus. If oral sex is practiced, as a result warts can show up in the mouth and the throat.

Genital warts are common and in medical terms referred to as "Condylomata acuminata" or "venereal warts." In a lot of cases of genital warts, warts are "not" seen. Visible warts can take anywhere from a fortnight to several months even longer to surface. Usual description of the warts is small fleshy growths, bumps or skin changes in or on the genital or anal region. For an accurate prognosis of the disease a visual examination would be carried out by your GP. If proof has it you have genital warts, he/she will treat accordingly. Treatments vary due to different factors like, what the warts look like and how many there is. Because venereal warts are a viral concern and not one endorsed through bacteria, antibiotics will not remove the warts. To rid warts would normally include specific methods like using creams or special liquid (freezing, heat, and surgery or laser treatment.)

If what you have spotted around the genitals is "vaginal pimples," then it's not really a common problem. If you're not sure what vaginal pimples look like, then they look like your usual "pimple." That's right; vaginal pimples are much akin to facial pimples, only these ones can bring soreness and sting. Pimples occur because of clogged pores and left untreated they can become severe causing abscesses to form. An abscess is an infected pocket of pus and painful. An abscess can show up on any body part. Regular spots we see an abscess include the armpit, anus, vaginal lips, face, and near to the tonsils.

It is important you know that some STDs might exhibit themselves as pimples around the genitalia. Pimples are not for squeezing so don't be tempted to put pressure on the infected area. Pimples can turn most severe and leave opening for infection if harshly squeezed, and strong possibility of leaving a scar. What is it they say "Zap those zits," yes by all means but only with safe treatments your doctor has suggested, or prescribed.

Avoid touching the pimples and cure them with medication, and not fingernails. Picking the warts is unhealthy. Scabbby sores if you have them are not for picking. Scabs will fall off in their own time.

Wear loose clothing around the genitals, tight underwear is a common reason for genital pimples occurring. Oil beneath the pores needs air and wearing tight garments prevents this from happening. Hormones, another cause linked to vaginal pimples. Around menstruation when your hormones aren't balanced well, the genitalia tend to overproduce sebum which means your pores won't be able to get them all out. Whether pimples are located round the genitals or the face, treatments are pretty much the same. Particular solutions for getting rid of acne can be used for vaginal pimples too, nonetheless have your GP clarify this.

As long as you're certain it is not genital herpes or genital warts you are suffering from and want to treat the vaginal pimples yourself then that's fine. Just make sure to keep the vaginal area clean and dry, and avoid some over the counter products because they can irritate the skin. Use a gentle soap for cleansing. Prescriptive medication may include oral medicines such as tetracycline, erythromycin or tretinoin.

Boils

If a boil has developed in the pubic area then more times than not the cause may well be connected to using a dirty razor blade while shaving your pubic hair, or using infected waxing straps. It is vital that everything that comes in contact with the genitals is properly sanitized. Even with salon equipment you can't be too careful, Make sure the equipment to be used on you is appropriately dealt with in regards to hygiene. Boils can also be a result of an ingrown hair. Be cautious of the part of the body the boil is located when it comes to treating it.

Is your query not of something spotted in the vaginal area but more something you feel? I refer to vaginal itching.

Vaginal itching is commonly recognized as the outcome of a yeast infection, and other vaginal infections. Itchiness occurring in and around the vagina/vulva can be reasoned by different causes, for example

  • Chemical irritants found in some washing powders, soaps, vaginal creams, toilet tissue, shower/bath products and feminine hygiene sprays, and more. Ask your pharmacist or doctor for more details on this
  • Women going through the change may experience vaginal itching caused by variation in estrogen levels. In the perimenopause these decrease, and as result vaginal wall thins which can lead to itching.

The HPV virus that is usually the cause of genital warts is not curable but the warts are.  You should never attempt to conduct or use unfamiliar treatments or methods for ridding your warts without seeing your GP first. In fact you shouldn't try to treat them yourself, full stop. It makes sense to have a medic see to you because after all the genitals are delicate and not to be messed around with.

A regular course of treatment for removing warts is cryotherapy. The warts are destroyed by freezing them with liquid nitrogen. The amount of liquid nitrogen used would depend on the size of the warts. While the process is carried out you might feel a slight burning sensation.

Cryotherapy is not normally performed in hospital, it is commonly done in the doctor's surgery. The recovery period can vary due to how many warts are removed and provided there were no complications. Healing generally takes between 7 to 21 days. In the time of recovery you can expect some minor discomforts.

After treatment discomforts

  • Irritation and soreness
  • Swelling
  • Sores or blisters

If you have had cryotherapy for external genital warts, and experience any of the symptoms below then see your GP.

  • Feeling feverish
  • Persistent bleeding
  • Foul smelling or yellowish discharge
  • Prolonged pain

Regardless of what vaginal issue it is you have an issue with, you have to do the right thing and have yourself checked out by your GP who can analyze the situation and prescribe you the best solution possible... The quicker you seek treatment the quicker you get rid of your warts, and then the quicker you get back to normality.
