Upon receiving my very first money pot, I was somewhat confused by the whole concept. Beautifully handcrafted, these pots are used as a means of saving spare change and are based upon a 2000 year old tradition of Italian pottery. Each pot is capable of holding approximately 200 pounds in mixed silver, making it a useful, yet elegant accessory for the home.

However, part of the tradition of these pots is to fill them with coins, then to smash them in order to release the savings. This is the part which confused me - why would I want to pay a significant sum for a pot, which I then have to smash? Surely it would be best to put that money to good use, rather than to spend it on a container for my cash?

I soon realised that breaking the pot is actually part of the ritual. Since there is no way to get to the cash in your pot until it is broken, you are less tempted to dip into your savings for those moments of frivolous spending. Furthermore, the whole excitement of filling the pot, and the satisfaction of breaking it actually provides great encouragement to save more cash.

I thoroughly recommend the money pot, not only as a means to save money, but also as a lovely ornament for the home. Available in a selection of beautiful hand painted designs, these fabulous pots make great gifts for all sorts of occasions. Whether or not you can bring yourself to break the pot in the end is up to you, but you will certainly enjoy saving your cash in one of these stylish little pots.

I can recommend Terramundi Pots. Renowned for their style and quality, they stock a huge variety of designs, as well as a range of personalisation options.
