While most people would be interested in the following information, ballet/sports/fitness buffs will be glad to know that Vitamin D is also helpful in our bodies using the calcium we ingest. This is important to all athletes, as children need good nutrition to develop strength while training (because they are growing too), and adults need the same, because technically we're on the slide down from optimum health.

Muscles, bones and connective tissues all need calcium - but now I'll get back to topic.....

The Creighton University School of Medicine in Nebraska has conducted a four year study to assess the reduction of cancer risk by supplementation with calcium and vitamin D.

The test participants were 1,179 women from rural areas in Nebraska. Approximately 1500 mg of calcium was given to part of the participants every day. This was supplemented with vitamin D, at a dosage of 1100 IU. The remainder of the women was given a placebo.

By the end of the four year study, the women who had the calcium and vitamin D supplements showed a 60 percent decrease in cancers.

More amazingly, just the last three years of the study showed a 77 percent reduction in cancer due to the use of calcium and vitamin D.

Sunshine, which, by means of processes in our skin, provides even more vitamin D for our body, was not factored into this study, and the quality of the calcium supplements was not considered as well.

Suppose a person were to select only high-quality (digestible) calcium supplements and get plenty of natural sunlight exposure or take top of the line vitamin D supplements ( as in those made from purified fish oil), you could probably have a greater decrease than the 77 percent result as concluded by this study.

The necessity of purified fish oils today is unfortunate, but you must take into account your mercury levels, as well as other pollutants from our oceans.

Time in the sun must also be selected wisely. Cool sun is as good as hot, and you can shade your face if you want to protect it.

Informed health choice is your biggest bet in leading a healthy 'go green', anti-aging, anti-cancer, real nutrition and active lifestyle.
