The Grudge 3 is the latest installment of the Grudge series which was released May 12, 2009 as a direct to DVD movie. Director of the Original Grudge and its sequel The Grudge 2, Takashi Shimizu, decided he would rather try his hand at producing on this film rather than directing, opening the door for Toby Wilkins to sign on as the director. Shimizu, who is also the writer of the original Japanese film Ju-On that was the basis for the Grudge, was also credited with writing for the film, along with screenwriter Brad Keene who wrote "Gravedancers" and "From Within".

Set in Chicago only a short while after the action takes place in Grudge 2, the story continues. Young Allison brought the curse with her from Tokyo. Running away did not help end the torture. Now we have Jake Kimball, lone survivor from Grudge 2, Locked up in a mental institution. Dr Ann Sullivan, acted by Shawnee Smith, is taking care of him.

Jake spills his nightmarish tale to Dr. Sullivan. She, of course, doesn't believe a word of what happened to his family. Then she witnesses him being attacked by the unseeable will of the infamous Kayako from both previous Grudge films.

Back in Japan Kayako's sister, Naoko hears via newspapers about the events that have gone on in America. Naoko knows how to finally put an end to the curse that has been ending peoples lives, so she decides to go to America to try to put a stop to it.

She journeys to the Chicago apartment from the Grudge 2. There she meets the landlord and his children. The youngest child Rose she realizes can communicate with the dead. Meanwhile the curse is tormenting the landlord and his family who have become close to Naoko, especially the older daughter Lisa.

Rose can end the curse by drinking Kayako's blood. This must happen while they perform an exorcism. It all goes badly wrong. Max, the father of the two girls, falls into complete insanity and manages to kill Naoko. Meanwhile the exorcism continues and actually works. The curse is gone. Or is it? Another curse comes into existence because of what happened to Naoko.

If you liked The Grudge movies, you have got to see this. So many questions from the earlier flicks are answered. The ending makes you think there are possibly more to come.

The Grudge 3 DVD is an all out assault on the senses. After the creepiness of the previous Grudge movies, The Grudge 3 DVD gives some closure and leaves room for the idea of another!
