If you have your mind set on having a tattoo you have to remember, tattoos are a lifelong commitment. In other words you can't wash them off. Of course there's laser removal but this comes at a price, not only is it the expense but more the pain involved having a tattoo removed by this method. This is why you have to be totally sure about having your skin dyed in this manner. A lot of people did admit that they regretted ever having a tattoo. And these same people said they were as drunk as a skunk when they had it done. Anyone under the influence of alcohol should stay clear of a tattoo parlor. Booze stirs up what we call Dutch courage, which is a kind of false strength that has people face the fear and do it. Avoid the "spur-of-the-moment tattoo" to avoid regret. You need to have all your bearings about you before having any type of body art done.

Tattoos were once something you would see occasionally on a sailors arm like Popeye, but over time tattoos became increasingly popular with heavy metal rock stars, and Harley-Davidson rockers (greasers) in the 1970s. It now seems to be the case in today's society to spot the person without a tattoo. Having a tattoo is a much sought after trend. In 2006 The American Academy of Dermatology reported that almost one in four of all Americans between the ages of 18 and 50, and more than one in three of those between 18 and 29, have a tattoo.

Some people go mad and have their body heavily tattooed from head to toe while others may sport one. Regular body parts for body piercing or tattoo is the neck, arm, back, hand, face, nose, leg and ankle. You name it, if it is flesh it can be designed on with ink. The scalp, nipples, belly button (navel) and genitals are other hotspots popular for ink and studs.

If your thinking of having a tattoo then that is what you must do "think." Think about what is involved and weigh up the pros and cons before any needle pierces your skin. Admittingly body art is beautiful if tastefully done, however if the process goes wrong then not so beautiful. In fact if complications rise, the consequences are ugly.

You need to choose a tattoo salon and tattooist that comes on recommendation. Back street parlors are dangerous. People tend to use these because they offer their services cheap. Cheap doesn't always give the best results, and neither does it assure safety in regards to your health. There is no reason for anyone to get a bad tattoo these days. As long as you're chosen tattoo artist holds all the specified qualifications to prove he/she is capable of performing this feat, then you shouldn't have a problem.

Tattoo Advice

  • Spontaneous decisions can result in a lifetime of regret.
  • Make sure you're emotionally prepared
  • Do this for you and not to please others
  • Choose you're design/pattern. Don't change your mind at the last minute because this says you're uncertain, and could lead to having a tattoo not to your liking. Take time out to choose again. Never compromise on your tattoo design.
  • You don't have to opt for a design on display in the tattoo studio. If you have a pattern of your own speak with the tattooist.
  • Figure out the exact size and placement of where your tattoo is to be designed.

To make your tattoo experience one that is safe and gives pleasing results then follow these guidelines below.

Make sure to use the service of an expert. Checking out expertise includes three basic elements: Experience, portfolio and attitude.  Tattoo safety depends on the artist you employ to do the body art. Choosing the right person will help avoid long lasting health problems. It is not unusual to experience adverse reactions, ranging from skin irritation to allergies to infection after having a tattoo, even when highest standards of tattoo safety is practiced.

The process of having a tattoo involves the skin being pierced with a needle causing thousands of miniscule openings which then gives opening for bacteria. To help prevent this happening check the tattoo artist uses

  • Brand-new sterile needles
  • Scrubs up beforehand
  • Wears surgical gloves and that all equipment is sanitized/sterilized
  • Blood infections can be fatal so be sure to check out the above safety pointers.

If the tattooist has proposed using a deodorant stick for transferring the tattoo design from paper to skin, double check that it is applied to a clean piece of paper first. It is against all the rules of tattoo safety to share a community deodorant stick. You need to know these things beforehand to stay safe.

Some people heal quicker than others and for some even longer again if they have a condition.  A person who's diabetic could be more at risk for infections, and may have an extended healing period following a tattoo.

Aftercare following a tattoo is vitally important. The tattoo artist will apply an ample amount of topical anti-bacterial treatment and a place swab over the decorated skin. Normally the tattoo artist will have checked with you first that you're not allergic to antibiotics before treating the wound because that's what it is until it heals. If you are not asked questions as such then maybe you should think twice before going ahead.

Keeping the area clean will include removing the swab type bandage and gently cleansing with an antibacterial soap and cool water. Smooth ointment over the area suggested by the tattooist to prevent the skin from chapping. Do this every four to six hours for approximately seven days.

Keep the tattoo covered when out in the sun so the skin doesn't become dry. Avoid scratching or rubbing. Always wash your hands with antibacterial soap after contact with the tattoo.

Until the tattoo has healed 100% don't share water (bath or swimming pool.)To help maintain the strength of the tattoo colors avoid chlorinated or salt water.

Continue using an alcohol-free moisturizer every day until you're completely sure the area has healed.

People like Angelina Jolie, Mike Tyson to David Beckham, and Eminem to Brittany Spears have tattoos, however expense is not a problem for them and can afford the best. Okay you may not have their sort of money but this doesn't mean you don't have to have the best too. There is a multitude of fabulous tattoo artists just as good as those who deal with the famous, and understand your financial situation, and therefore give you the best for less. Never cut corners and use the services of someone who is more qualified at botching up the job.

If you love tattoos and would like more but money is an issue then you can train to become a tattoo artist and do your own. This will allow you to have as many tattoos for free. You could also help your friends save money too by doing their's for them. You don't have to be like Picasso to do this, if this is what worries you. With the aid of stencils you can become as good as the next body art expert.

If you abide by the rules and endorse strict safety awareness while you perform then you can master this.
