5 Top Tips for First-time Bloggers

So, you've decided you want to make a blog. After all, everyone seems to have a blog nowadays. Once you've settled on the subject of the blog, you need to decide where you will host your blog: choose from a free host like Blogger (BlogSpot) or WordPress or you might choose to pay for hosting and that way, your blog domain name will not include the name of your host. This decision really depends on you; most people choose to pay for hosting when their blog is for commercial reasons. If you are simply blogging about your last holiday or your pet cat, then there is little need to invest in hosting. Later on, you can always migrate the blog to a paid hosting account, if your needs change or your blog develops into a money-making venture. Finally, you need to choose and register a name and then you will be ready to go. But before you start blogging, read these following tips most of us want our blog to be read by as many people as possible. Once you have regular and repeat visitors to your page, you will be able to start making money. These tips should help you get maximum traffic to your page, improve your blogging experience and get the most out of your blog.

Create a sitemap to your blog
Why create a sitemap? A sitemap is, as you might guess from the name, a map of your website that helps the search engines find their way through your site and index your pages effectively. You can create a sitemap in Google Webmaster Tools. Make a Google Webmaster account (if your blog is with blogger, it will recognize your login. Once you have logged in, add your site (blog) and follow the instructions to verify the site. Once you have verified your site, select the option to make the sitemap and then submit the sitemap to Google. You should return and submit your sitemap regularly to ensure the search engine is indexing your most recent pages and content. Create search-engine friendly URLs The URL (domain name) is a very important part of your site. Ideally, the URL you have chosen for your blog will include at least one or two of the keywords associated with your product/service/information topic. For example, if you are writing about hotels in New York, www.newyorkhotels.com would be a good site, where as www.tiger101.com would be totally irrelevant. If the desired URL is not available, try variations, like www.new-york-hotels.com, www.hotelsinnewyork.com, etc. Once you start creating pages and adding posts, each item will have its own URL, like www.newyorkhotels.com/home and www.newyorkhotels.com/pageid=7, where pageid=7 is the number generated by the host to name your page. This in an example of a standard URL. It does nothing to help the search engine find your content easily. If pageid=7 is the code for a page about The Hilton Hotel, it would be better that the URL read www.newyorkhotels.com/hilton. In some blogging software, like blogger, this kind of URLs are generated automatically, where as in others, like WordPress, you need to install an SEO (search engine optimization) plugin The All in One SEO Pack is a good option. Once installed, you need to go to the settings of the plugin and select Generate Search Engine Friendly URLs'. From now on, the URL for each page will be composed of the domain name of your site and the title of each page/post. It is now important to make sure you title your pages in a logical and relevant way.Submit your URL to Google, Yahoo, Bing and Ask.com  The search engines work buy periodically "crawling" through all the pages on the World Wide Web. It is not known how often they do this, so to speed up the process of them finding your site, you should submit your website to each of the major search engines. To do this, simply do a Google search "Add URL to "Google" / "yahoo" / "Bing" / "ask", and follow the instructions.

Add content regularlySearch engines respond to sites that are regularly updated with new, original content. br>Try to add something to your site every day, even if it's something small. Make sure that with every post you include tags and/or keywords related to the subject these should be keywords or key-phrases for which people will be searching.
Submit your blog to blog directoriesYou should submit your new blog to directories of sites and blogs on the internet like www.blogbal.com. There are lots of directories out there that help you increase the traffic to your site. Look for one that has clear sections and make sure you add your blog to the relevant section or sections.

Happy Blogging!
