It is no secret that Tom Cruise has lost many fans over the years because of his religious, scientology views. Evangelicals have led boycotts against Cruise movies and Christians have become tired with Cruise sharing his religion all the time.

Today, news is out that Brad Pitt is looking to share his beliefs as well. I think it is not going to fair well for him. Pitt is promoting his new movie, "Inglourious Basterds"  when he agreed to an interview with the German Magazine BILD.

The transcript and responses were a little disturbing.

BILD: Do you believe in God?
Brad Pitt (smiling): No, no, no!
BILD: Is your soul spiritual?
Brad Pitt: No, no, no! I'm probably 20 per cent atheist and 80 per cent agnostic. I don't think anyone really knows. You'll either find out or not when you get there, until then there's no point thinking about it.

Did he just admit to the free world that he does not believe in God? He already has lost quite a few fans after cheating on Jennifer Aniston for Jolie. Females tend to hold that against a guy.

Now he is admitting that he does not believe in a creator. I think this is not going to hold well with his popularity. Cruise learned the hard way that looks only gets you so far. I think he is talented, but I think bringing your beliefs into who your image is can be a major mistake.

It can even be a mistake for Christians. Just look at Kirk Cameron or Mel Gibson. How much more are they judged?

Religious beliefs should be left out of the public forum unless you are ready to face the consequences. I am sure this will not end well for Pitt. One more downfall in an already viewed as messed up life.

"I think bringing your beliefs into who your image is can be a major mistake"

It can be, but he was asked the question. Being defensive and refusing to answer can be very damaging to a celebrity's image too.

He says he doesn't believe in God, but admits he doesn't know for sure - none of us do. Nothing really objectionable in that, and no reason for any fans to think less of him.

This is very different to the Tom Cruise situation, where he regularly demonstrates his enthusiasm for something (scientology) that is widely considered to be nonsensical (what with being founded by a sci-fi writer who'd previously stated that if he wanted to get rich he'd start a religion) and possibly fraudulent.

Saying you don't know if there's a God shouldn't be controversial.

It's certainly nothing like claiming that you have special abilities due to your "Operating Thetan" level, and acting crazy on certain talk shows :)

There are many successful actors who have made similar public admissions of atheism or agnosticism, and it hasn't damaged their careers. It is just part of the body of irrelevant information fans love to collect, like what their favourite colour is or what foods they like.

Other actors who have revealed themselves to be atheists or agnostics include Angelina Jolie (although with spiritual beliefs), Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Ian McKellen, Uma Thurman, William Shatner, Richard Dean Anderson, and Michael Caine.

Also George Clooney, who made a relevant point:

"It's an interesting thing. I'll tell you what's tricky about this. In talking about religion, if you're well known, anything you say, it sort of takes off about a bunch of other people and attacks their belief. So I always try to say that, you know, first and foremost, that whatever anybody believes as long as it doesn't hurt anybody else, it's fair enough, and works, and I think, is real, and matters. I don't happen to have those beliefs, as much, you know, I don't believe in those things"

he only says it because Angelina and george clooney are atheists. The guy doesn't have a mind of his own.
