Realizing today that Grandparent's Day is just around the corner on Sept. 13th, I began thinking how blessed my kids have been over the years by their own grandparents.
As a parent, it has been amazing to watch my own parents and in-laws fall into these roles as professionals.
My kids are extremely blessed. They have a Mimi, a PawPaw, a Grandpa, a MawMaw Bettye and a PawPaw Sonny Frank. Can you imagine? If you ask either of my kids about any of the aforementioned group, they will talk for hours despite only seeing some a few times a year.
It really got me to thinking about how blessed we are at any given time because of their influence on my children. Many of my fondest memories growing up are of spending time with my own grandparents. Thus, every time we come together, I can't help but get emotional at the memories my own kids are making.
It is a tradition for my son and his mimi to go shopping every year for back to school. First I can not tell you how much it helps my husband and I financially, but that is a side note. It is actually something my son lives for and I know a lot of it is getting new stuff. But I think the real reason he loves it is that it is his alone time with his mimi.
Granted, she is spoiling him the entire time!
But he lives for that day. All summer long, he asks, "when do I get to go shopping with Mimi?" At least that is what I have heard all week of this week.
His pawpaw is the same way. If there is a sport he wants to play, he is paying for whatever he needs. Not to mention the dollar bills my kids come home with every time they visit.
Then their grandpa is talking on the phone with them every week, sending musical cards with more money to their causes.
It makes you wonder sometimes if they think we are even feeding the kids.
All three are the first ones called whenever a big event in their lives happens. It is funny hearing them share their lives with them and the support and encouragement they provide my kids.
Grandparents provide so much financially for their grandkids, but they do so much more than that!
We are blessed by our crew of grandparents. If you ask my kids what they like best, they will not be at a lost for words.
"PawPaw Sonny Frank and I have the same birthday," my son said. "He likes playing games with me!"
"MawMaw Bettye makes the best spaghetti and she used to email me all the time."
My kids are extra blessed because their great grandparents are still alive. Although we live eight hours away, my kids still have several memories to choose from when the topic comes up.
My kids are blessed financially, emotionally, physically and spiritually by their grandparents. I know for certain when I finally drift off to sleep every night that I am not the only one who just finished praying for my kids! They offer so much more then I ever imagined from history lessons to tales of our own childhoods to good cooking to comfort to endless loving!
My cup seems to be over full this Grandparents Day with gratitude for what I feel is the most loving group of grandparents in the world! I can't imagine my kids' lives without them.
So to all the grandparents in our lives as well as all over the world who bless us endlessly: Happy Grandparent's Day!
