In good years we went to private school in bad years we went to public school. to me school was school, public, private, it made no difference. I had a good time either way and I guess I was smart enough that it didn't make any difference. In those years I loved to read, I still do, especially stories of the sea. My favorite character was Captain Horatio Hornblower. I would have given anything to sail with him or someone like him. I was eleven. When I was twelve, in 1st Form (private school = 7th grade public), I saw Jimmy Stewart in a movie, "Navy Blue and Gold". It was about Midshipmen at the US Naval Academy, in Annapolis, Maryland. That would give me a shoot at sailing with the likes of Captain Hornblower. I never wavered, I had to go to the Academy. I'm not sure of what my real intentions were, whether I wanted to be like Jimmy Stewart, Captain Hornblower or what, but i was dedicated to going to the Academy. what a pain I was to my Dad. I needed a congressional appointment to be allowed to apply, so I bothered him until he found someone. I got my appointment, after passing physical and mental (SAT's) tests.

Now in those days, nice Jewish boys were supposed to become doctors, lawyers or at the least businessmen, not sailors. My best girl friend's father, promised her a Chevy convertible, if she promised never to see me again. Guess what? I never saw her again.

& ; To make a long story short I went to the US Naval Academy, graduated and enjoyed just about every minute of my stay there. The minutes that I didn't enjoy were in chemistry class and running off demerites that I had recieved for minor infractions of the rules. One set of demerites I remember clearly. I was doing a soft shoe dance in the hall after a pre game pep rally bon fire. The officer of the deck wasn't amused. I got two hours running around the football field, carrying a rifle. I was a bit too exuberant, the running took some of that out of me. (Cont)
