It is hard to believe those in authority would pass up an empty high-security prison in Montana to house the detainees from Gitmo and choose a prison in Michigan? New developments are stirring in the late summer winds to house those remaining in Gitmo at Standish, Michigan.
I personally would have preferred a location of Hardin, Montana, where history rings of Custer's Last Stand and a prison sets totally empty. As many of us interested in history are aware,
Custer and his men were defeated at the County of Big Horn in one of the Native American's foremost military victories. It is one of the greatest American historical tragedies....it could have become quite an interesting connection between the war on terror and Custer's Last Stand. Actually, the potential for a darn good novel.
The state of Michigan is getting very close to home and to neighboring friends living there. I am certain the American people will be kept informed as always with these monumental decisions that keep shifting. At this point in time, I do not believe any such news will receive the attention it once got when Cheney helped erect a monument to surround and confuse the subject matter.
If we have to transport Gitmo detainees to the U. S., there are many other areas hurting economically besides Standish. From what I understand, the decision making is not far off and could be when the leaves change to brilliant colors and start to fall. The deadline for closing of Guatanamo Bay is approaching in January 2010.
With economical hardships throughout the nation, many citizens are willing to lower their defenses in housing terrorists suspects and take to considering them no more dangerous than other felons; however, congress and governors continue to object the target it may cause for their regional areas and this writer tends to agree.
I wouldn't want them any place close to my hometown which has a top-security prison nearby, but then I have been throwing a lot of opinions around with this subject matter for many months.
I heard a talk show on radio lately. They interviewed the head of the prison in Montana, of which you speak. I think that would have been a logical place to house these detainees.
We have a Canadian citizen in Gitmo, and many Canadians want him returned to Canada. NOT ME! I say, let him face American justice. Although the Canadian government is under pressure to bring him back, they don't want him either.
Thanks, David, for your comments ~ I do believe this prison choice has been bounced around for many, many months ~ it'll be interesting to learn of the outcome and the potential litigation that may be brought against those in authority who participated in the choice of tactics of interrogation techniques ~ something that I think is more threat than reality.
