Do you pray for the president? If you and I would spend less time criticizing the president and more time praying for him, we would have a better nation and a better world.
On July 4, I found the following prayer on the website of Dr. Charles Stanley, a prominent pastor in Atlanta, GA. The web site at intouch.org encouraged everyone to share this prayer and pray it every day.
There are 10 petitions.
Dear Heavenly Father, we pray that our elected officials:
1.) Would recognize their personal sinfulness and need for the cleansing power of Jesus Christ.
2.) Would understand their inadequacy for the task before them and their need to pray for God's wisdom, knowledge, and courage.
3.) Would reject all counsel that violates the spiritual principles of God's Word and be willing to trust God to lead them in the right direction.
4.) Would resist the pressures of those who would lead them astray or tempt them to disobey the Lord and His will for their lives.
5.) Would work to reverse the trend toward ungodliness in our land and to restore America's Christ-centered values.
6.) Would be prepared to make godly choices in the best interest of America, regardless of the cost.
7.) Would rely upon the Word of God and prayer for strength and success.
8.) Would maintain dignity, honor, trustworthiness, and righteousness in office.
9.) Would strive to be a godly example to the men, women, and children of this land.
10.) Would remember that while in office, they are accountable to God for their attitudes, actions, and motives.
Let's pray whole-heartedly for President Obama, and for all other people in authority over us. You can be totally opposed to everything the president stands for and still love him and pray for him.
After all, 1 Timothy 2:1-2 commands us to pray for all people, especially our leaders:
"Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence (NKJV)."
Let's pray.
