News is coming out from the Department of Justice that three hackers have been indicted for stealing 130 million credit card and debit card numbers.
The news is astounding to me that many people could be affected from having identity theft stolen from hackers.
As we move farther into technological advances, it worries me that our money and assets are so easily taken away from individuals by people we never even see stalking us on the other side of the screen.
The news is just coming out as I write this, but it seems that five different corporations had a security breach.
How do we protect ourselves from hackers or honestly, theifs?
We can't see them. We can't lock the doors to our computers? We can't control the security of companies we are purchasing from? So how do we protect ourselves?
Check your credit report
There are several people, as we speak, whose number was stolen during this hack that the justice department is talking about today. The only way to know for sure is to check your credit report. Do you see any unusual activity? You are eligible for free credit reports every six months. Use those to make sure you are not attacked or robbed.
Take out a policy
Some cards and insurance companies are now offering insurance policies to protect against these attacks. I think personally it is so worth the money to know if your number is stolen, you are protected.
Be cautious who you do business with and when
Hackers can totally wipe out any kind of business from small to big so be sure the company you are sending your card to is reputable and offer security cautions. Also, be careful shopping online during Christmas because hackers will attack during peak seasons.
We will wait in the upcoming days to see the extent of the attack by these three hackers. The name of the companies is yet to be released. In the meantime, it might be a good time to check your accounts and credit reports.
