Before addressing the matter of brown vaginal discharge and its causes, first stop panicking until an exact cause is determined for it being the color it is, and then may be no reason for panic. Vaginal discharge is something doctors usually rely upon to make an accurate diagnosis of vaginal infections. It is normally infection that has women see changes in their vaginal secretion which may include color, texture, smell and the amount lost.

One specific cause can't be given for brown vaginal discharge as there are several. Let's look at what vaginal discharge is all about and the types that there is.

Every woman at some point will see discharge which is a secretion the vagina releases. There's absolutely nothing abnormal about this, however if accompanied with vaginal pain, vaginal itching or burning then it's not deemed normal and should be checked out. You like most women I assume - when looking for information has most likely come across the issue of green vaginal discharge, yellow discharge, white, grey and clear but never finding the answer to the type you want to know about.

It's normal for the vagina to produce a clear to whitish discharge throughout the menstrual cycle. It can vary in consistency from thick and gooey to thin slimy or creamy. A normal discharge is odorless. If there's a nasty smell this could signify a problem. The amount of vaginal fluid can greatly increase at times of stress, ovulation and sexual intercourse. All vaginas secrete fluid but because women differ the amount they lose will diverge…some seeing heavy loss while others very little. During the menstrual cycle changes are more noticeable.

Light brown discharge coming at the end of menstruation is most probably missed blood that never passed out at the time it should have, and the vagina is now cleaning away the blood left behind.

Types of vaginal discharge

1) White thick watery or pasty vaginal discharge is usual. But if the secretion has you itching or feel a burning sensation then it can denote yeast infection.  2) Clear runny discharge can be reasoned by extreme exertion. Glands inside your vagina and cervix produce tiny amounts of fluid which flows out of the vagina every day taking old cells that have lined the vagina along with it. This is your body's way of keeping the vagina healthy and clean. Discharge is usually clear or milky and doesn't smell bad. 3) Yellow or green vaginal discharge is strongly associated with infection. A common question asked in relation to color of this sort is, ‘Is it normal to itch and have a yellow-colored discharge that stains underwear?' No, if this happens it could mean a yeast or bacterial infection so see your GP. Green/yellow secretion along with pain when urinating, and if there has been much sexually activity going on then it's possible an STD (gonorrhea) be the cause, or that of "nongonococcal urerthritis" which is commonly caused by chlamydia.

Bloody discharge is the one type that leaves women bewildered if it occurs when their period isn't due. Discharge containing huge amounts of blood has girls scared witless because they know it could be a sign that it's a matter of seriousness, more so than them girlie conditions that can be treated at home. Bloody discharge could be a symptom of a virus…one which causes cervical dysplasia.  Cervical dysplasia is dangerous in pregnant women because it can cause preterm labor. If the quantity increases before 37 weeks and especially if it's pink or brownish see your GP or midwife. Vaginal bloody discharge is also linked to other conditions such as chronic infection or cancer of the cervix, uterus, ovary or other body organs.

Clear squashy discharge is "fertile" mucous and seen around ovulation.

Brown vaginal discharge sometimes referred to as brown blood vaginal discharge is when bleeding takes longer to pass through the vagina which affects the color on release from red to light brown.  Color of menstrual blood can alter when exposed to air.

Ways to treat and help reduce brown blood vaginal discharge.

  • Drink plenty of water daily (8 to 10 glasses.) Instead of coffee or tea have a cold refreshing tumbler of water.
  • Eat fresh fruit and vegetables. There is much variety of both so find a couple, if not more you're partial too and eat plenty of them.
  • Foods such as whole grains not only help reduce the risk of infection they provide a might source for strengthening the system.
  • Wear panty liners until you have cleared the condition of a brown vaginal discharge to avoid staining under garments.
  • Too much alcohol or misuse of drugs is not good for overall sexual health.
  • Cut down on sugar and sweet substances.
  • Don't use toilet tissue that is fragranced to avoid irritation.

A light brown vaginal discharge lost in vast quantity may require an examination of the cervix for HPV or wart viruses

When the concern of an abnormal vaginal secretion is brought to light it is frequently the result of simple things that we ourselves do, and take for granted. We think by using certain products or practicing different methods we are keeping ourselves and our vagina's safe and healthy when in fact, most of what we do has the adverse affect.

Ways to help reduce vaginal discharge.

  • Wear knickers made of cotton.
  • Forget the idea about douching as it's known for upsetting the pH balance of the vagina.
  • Avoid scented deodorants, antiperspirants and highly fragranced feminine sprays. Choose products specially created for this delicate area.

There are some things women do that actually cause vaginal discharge but UN-be known to them. It's important they know of these to avoid unhealthy vaginal fluid. Some women find it difficult having to part with, or sacrifice their doings that make them feel and smell good... but if vaginal health is involved then there shouldn't be any doubts. To keep the vagina and yourself safe from harm begin by emptying the bathroom cabinet of any damaging products that's a threat to you're well being

Wash the vagina with specially formulated soap to help control discharge and not with soap just because it comes in pretty packaging. Don't wear nylon around the genitals. Obesity, even the contraceptive pill and miscarriage can cause brown vaginal discharge

"Dark" brown vaginal discharge could be an indication of a viral lesion, an infertility risk issue, to include HPV plantar wart viruses. Considerable changes seen in color and odor of vaginal fluid can denote infection or fetal developmental concerns in pregnant women. Slight spotting is possible during the critical months of pregnancy, but not deemed abnormal.

You can't afford to be shy about girlie matters as such so see your GP. Procrastination doesn't cure it only gives rise to more problems like having to get a double dose of medication for something that has worsened because you never sought help earlier.
