Before re-design, this narrow back yard was divided in just the wrong place with a straight brick wall, used to retain the higher, rear portion. It felt cramped and very static. The new design called for a curvy stone retaining wall, dry-laid, which created a sense of graceful, flowing motion. In the course of working on the project, we discovered that the far corner, previously unused and unattractive, received a good dose of the morning sun. So we decided to make that a morning seating area.

Very often remote corners or out-of-the-way spaces are left undeveloped, unused. With a little creativity those areas can become valuable portions of your property, offering a different sort of experience and providing a different kind of use. Such spaces are also excellent for creating a destination place in the garden - always a wonderful thing to include, if you have a space for it. A destination place gives you a reason to visit your garden, gets you out and within it where you can and will benefit from the myriad, positive influences a garden provides. To make one, all you have to do is include some element you enjoy, that you enjoy visiting, or find a place that has some attribute you appreciate. Here, the spot was inviting for the morning sun and would make a pleasant place to sit with the morning coffee and paper. But we went a step further and gave it a charm of its own. How?

By making a mosaic of hand chipped brick and stone in an arts and crafts design, we created a destination place a pleasure to visit. Although not technically difficult nor requiring a great deal of skill, there are over two thousand pieces of brick and stone hand chipped with a brick hammer, so it does take a lot of work.

The design is of three 'streams' flowing toward the center from three opposing corners. Where they meet, swirls were created, forming small 'eddies' or rosettes. Why do all this? Very simply, because a garden is there to provide pleasure, to elicit happiness. The more elements of beauty or interest we include within the garden, so long as they contribute to the overall harmony of the space, the more we have to enjoy and benefit from.

Now, the owners come out here with their morning coffee and paper, sit and enjoy the beauty of a garden in what was a previously unused and unattractive corner, now transformed into a pleasurable place to be.
