NSAID stands for nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. NSAID represent a group of drugs used to treat arthritis because they provide pain killing properties (analgesic), anti-inflammatory properties and fever-reducing (antipyretic) properties.

Some of the more common NSAIDs used to fight arthritis pain without a prescription include aspirin, Ibuprofen and Naproxen. These are mostly used at OTC remedies for ridding arthritis pain. So how do NSAIDs work?

How NSAIDs Work

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs inhibit the popular cyclooxygenase enzyme. Research indicate the cyclooxygenase enzyme are two forms known as COX-1 and COX-2. COX-1 helps to maintain healthy tissues, while COX-2 is related to inflammation. So NSAIDs help to block the pain signals so the body doesn't recognize the pain. As the number of uninsured increases, many may turn to OTC remedies to naturally fight arthritis and joint pain. However OTC NSAIDs may not be powerful enough since to help to reduce the consistent pain of arthritis.

A Natural NSAID to Fight Arthritis Pain

One natural NSAID many are turning to is tart cherries. The reason this tiny red fruit is fast becoming the first choice of arthritis suffers is they have been shown to be natural way to fight arthritis pain. Tart cherries contain naturally flavonoid compounds that function in a similar manner as NSAIDs. Research shown these may inhibit both COX enzymes. However, the advantage cherries offer over other NSAIDs is the naturally occurring flavonoids in cherries may protect stomach damage. In addition, cherries are a high source of melatonin which may also protect against unwanted side-effects.

However, no matter how popular cherries become for arthritis suffers getting fresh cherries year round is difficult since they are only available during a few short weeks during the July harvest. Due to this, many are turning to other tart cherries products including drinking tart cherry juice concentrate or taking tart cherry capsules. One reliable company that provides both the tart cherry juice and the tart cherry capsules is Traverse Bay Farms. The company has been offering cherry products for almost 10 years and has earned the reputation of excellent customer service and high-quality tart cherry products.

According to research, cherry juice and tart cherry capsules deliver more antioxidant power then the fresh fruit. So for those joint pain suffers looking to get natural pain relief drinking the cherry juice or taking tart cherry capsules are a convenient and powerful alternative.
