Looking to replace those junky earbuds that came with your current music player? If you said no, you should really think about it! Most mp3 and portable music players sound quality can be greatly improved by purchasing some higher quality earbuds. And the best part is that you don't have to spend a ton of money. If you've been using cheap headphones all this time, you'll be amazed at how much better your music sounds with a quality pair.

Earbud style eadphones come in two main varieties. Regualr earbuds and in ear monitors, also known as IEM's or canal phones. Traditional earbuds are likely what came with your mp3 player. They rest in your ear but don't actually fit into your ear canal. This is the big difference from in ear style buds. They actually fit into your ear canal and form a seal. Similar to foam earplugs. The tips on many of these IEM's actually look like earplugs. They either come in silicone, rubber or foam.

The seal that canal phones provide in your ear is great becuase they end up blocking out a lot of outside noise. This is ideal for students who listen to music while studying or anyone who is travelling on a bus or airplane. This also lets you listen to your music at a reduced volume level. When using regular earbuds outdoors, most people need to crank the volume just to be able to drown out the outside noise. Not good for your ears! Canal phones let you listen to your music in noisy environments at a much lower and safer volume level.

If you don't like IEM's, replacement earbuds will still offer a huge improvement over your stock ones. Earbuds are inexpensive and can be found in any electronics store.

The best way to try out different earphones is to ask your friends. See if they will let you try out theirs. The next best way to find a good pair is to read online reviews. Shopping sites such as Amazon have user reviews for every product that they sell. This is a great way to get personal opinions from people who have actually purchased and used the headphones that you are interested in.

When purchasing make sure you ask the store what their return policy is. Some stores won't let you return earbuds while others will. If you buy a pair and they don't fit properly or hurt your ears, it's great to be able to return them and try a different model.

Follow these tips and you should get much more enjoyment out of your portable music player. You'll be shocked at how much they can improve the sound quality of yoru music and make listening more enjoyable.

Sheila,

As one working in the 'sound' business, I found your advice to be very good. For my computer, we purchased Bose speakers for $100. Definitely more than worth the price and a tax write-off to boot!

Thanks for a good, informative article,

Nanchy
