Residents of the United Kingdom who have not yet been to see a Chiropractor are usually scared to schedule that first visit.  They worry that Chiropractic visits are painful and last a long time.  Here is the good news: seeing the Chiropractor is not usually a painful experience.  The length of the visit, however, will depend on the type of treatment and therapy you need.

Chiropractors will treat a patient's whole body, though Chiropractic philosophy dictates that special attention be focused on a patient's spine and joints.  This is because Chiropractors believe that most illnesses and injuries can be treated through realigning the spine and the joints.  Here is what to expect from visits to a Chiropractor.

During your first visit to your Chiropractor, you can expect to have a full history taken as well as a physical exam.  The physical exam will usually be centred on the spinal column though some attention will be paid to the rest of your body as well.  You might also have some x-rays taken, to narrow down the cause of your pain.

If your Chiropractor thinks that having Chiropractic treatment done is the best course of action for your particular injury or pain, the two of you will begin working on a long term treatment plan.

On your follow up visits and therapy appointments with your Chiropractor, a few things will happen.  Your Chiropractor will probably begin by aligning your spine and joints.  Some people call this "cracking the back" because of the noise that the joints and spine make as they are moved.  The term "crack" is a misnomer because a spinal adjustment is not usually painful.  It is possible that your Chiropractor will also schedule mobilization therapy appointments.  During these appointments your Chiropractor will simply move your joints and muscles in their normal range of motion to improve your current levels of functioning.

Your Chiropractor might also use ice or heat to help relax your muscles.  You might also be prescribed bed rest or a variety of simple exercises that can be used to do some of your rehabilitation work at home.  You might also be given electrical stimulation treatments, pressure treatments or massages to help relieve your pain and help your injury heal.

You might also work with your Chiropractor to put together a diet and exercise plan or your Chiropractor might recommend psychological therapy as well as your regular treatment.

It is natural to feel tired after visiting the Chiropractor.  Chiropractic therapy is not unlike an intense workout.  The major difference is that it is the Chiropractor who is moving you, not one of the gym's exercise machines.

There is no need to worry about an upcoming visit to the Chiropractor.  Chiropractic care is rarely painful.  It is meant to help a person heal and diminish the pain he or she might be feeling.
