How do you obtain a security clearance? What steps will help you get there? First of all, there is no better way to get a job than to apply for it. If you don't apply, the odds are, you want get it. If you do apply, there is a better chance of exposure.
It is difficult to search for a job and find one quickly, unless you have the right contacts. I f you're looking for a job with a clearance, sometimes it is intimidating to those who have never had one. If you network with someone who has a security clearance it will help with job search.
Tips for gaining a security clearance:
1. Join the military has several job opportunities that require clearances
2. Apply for government jobs - these are all over the place. Start with usajobs, but there are other sites too.
3. Networking with personnel who have clearances this is a must to get first hand experiences
There are other variables that may or may not cause you to obtain a security clearance: credit rating, criminal background, and integrity. What I mean by integrity is your ability to be trusted with the information you receive, especially government related. Also, some clearances require a polygraph, so make sure you're telling the truth.
My advice is to find a job that peak your interests. If it requires a clearance, do your best to impress the employer. Sometimes they will initiate the clearance process for you if due diligence is shown on your part. I know several people who have had a clearance for years and maintain it. Also, it's not a one-stop shop for clearances. You will get interviewed about your clearance status every several years, depending on what type of clearance you have.
