The experience is reassuringly similar to using a normal cordless phone, and on our 8MB/sec DSL line the quality of VoIP was indistinguishable from a land line call. Eight integrated internal antennas and support for 5 GHz Wireless-N help to avoid interference from household appliances, cordless phones and even other neighboring Wi-Fi networks. Best of all, these kind of cordless phones offer long range, digital features that are rather advanced, and also offer a very clear quality of sound. After all, we are living in the digital age and need to advance with times.

Like other dual-mode phones such as the D-Link DPH-C160S and Auvi PHIP64 the Netgear SPH200D will allow users to make calls via Skype Out and receive calls with SkypeIn as well as with their standard land line number. The phone comes with the usual base station that can be connected to your land line via RJ11 and to your broadband router via Ethernet. These two come in two units, a base station that connects to the Router and Phone line and a cordless handset. Calls are placed/received using the handset.

It's dual-mode capability allows users to leverage Skype and the PSTN for calling. The SPH200D simultaneously supports both traditional telephony services and Skype Internet calling, eliminating the chance that a user will miss either Skype or traditional phone calls. In addition, they have incorporated DECT technology into the cordless phone to improve the range and enhance the audio quality.

In addition, you can plug the base station into your phone line wall jack to make land line calls from the same cordless phone. This phone is DECT Cordless which is ideal for long range and clear voice quality. As a land line phone, the Netgear SPH200D is pretty basic. You do get support for caller ID and a flash button for call waiting.

Once the account user name and password has been plugged into the handset, the phone does the rest on it's own, a process that is transparent to the user. The only slight inconvenience is that when dialing, the user must manually choose whether to route the call over a land line connection or Skype, something that can be mildly confusing at first. You essentially insert power, network and phone line plugs into the appropriate sockets and you're done. If you do end up leaving the handset off the dock for a few days, the battery will drain and doesn't seem to hold a charge like a cell phone can if you have it completely turned off. Of course, if you place the handset in the recharging cradle between calls, you'll be fine.
