A lighter is a fairly simple device and learning the composition of one is not difficult. All of these components will need to be kept clean over the course of time if you expect the lighter to last as many years as it can.
If you have a butane cigar lighter, the reservoir for it will require no cleaning. The reservoir on a butane lighter is a sealed environment that is designed to hold pressurized gas, so you will not need to bother with cleaning inside of it. The reservoir on a liquid-fueled lighter, like a Zippo, is usually very simple to clean. The reservoir in these cigar lighters can simply be taken out and replaced when it becomes too dirty. The flame jets on a lighter are usually somewhat recessed into the lighter. These are simple to clean and are usually only a problem to clean if there is some kind of obstruction in them. Of course, if your cigar lighter is made of certain materials, you may not want to be tapping it on any surfaces. In this case, stick with the tweezers for any hard to remove obstructions.
