If you find yourself leading in any capacity whatsoever, you owe it to those you lead to learn about self talk and motivation. There is little we can do that will help other people more than to teach them to motivate themselves. Inner motivation is necessary in today's fast paced business world. If you have trouble finding the time to read a motivational book or listen to a success tape, then how can you expect your people to have the time. However, as the old adage goes... "you can give a man a fish and feed him for a day, or you can teach him to fish and feed him for a life time."

We each have an inner voice or navigation system through which we view life. In most cases these systems are skewed, because we gauge the things we see daily through the lenses of past experience. If we have a self image that "sees" us as failures in any area of our lives, you can bet that we shall continue to fail in that area. If you continually have trouble sticking with a diet, that is because you see yourself as not able to stick to a diet. Yes... you became that way out of past failure, but to change the way you are, you must address the root of the issue, discipline is not the answer. The way we change this image is by rebuilding our mental navigation system.

In the same example as above, let's consider how we would change our thinking. Look at your thought life. Look at how you perceive yourself to be in your own mind. Chances are your habitual thought patterns constantly rebuild the foundation of your own perception as seeing yourself fat and unable to stick with a diet. Taking control of those thought patterns is the answer.

Challenge every thought that is contrary to your own success, reverse it and play that image across your mind as often as you used to play the old imagery, and your life will change quickly. You will fail from time to time, but be gentle with yourself. Self motivation is holy ground. Teach those you lead these truths, and you will find yourself leading successful people.

Jay Hopson is a creature of his own making. Bankrupt at age 52, he did some major self examination and realized a great deal of his problems were caused by his own habits and belief system. Changing those beliefs  has become the most fascinating process in his life. See how he does it at:

Good article. Seems we have walked similar paths. I have found that our money problems stem directly from what we believe about money. Those beliefs drive our behavior, and if those beliefs are founded on poor principles they will lead to disaster. For me, that inner voice is God who is the ultimate source of all truth. If I base my beliefs about what He says in the Bible, I am confident I've taken the right path. Thanks for the article.

Thank you Jim. I agree with you. I have found that it is easy to get stuck on serving God and living in poverty, but I don't think that is really what He asks of us. He owns the cattle on a thousand hills. I now believe He want us to live accordingly.

Jay, good points. A Bible study leader known throughout the US named Beth Moore has a similar philosophy. She calls it "changing your wallpaper", meaning the the old thoughts or wallpaper in your brain needs to be torn down and replaced with whatsoever things are true, not how you feel. Thanks for writing and welcome back.

Hi Jay.

Thank you for a well-written article on leadership. It is true, I need my "navigation system" or the inner voice reviewed and rebuilt for me to be productive again. Thank you.

Best to you.

Nenita
