When it comes time for food party planning, there are a few questions the host must ask of himself or herself in order to help ensure that his or her event will be successful. First of all, he or she must determine how many guests will be invited. In addition, the way that the food will be offered to guests is also important. Last, but not least, it is important to gauge how much food and beverages will be needed per guest.

The elements of food party planning are listed and explained below. By taking these into account, you will definitely find that your planning experience will go more smoothly.

1. How many guests will be attending?

There is no way to know exactly who will attend and who won't, even if you have an RSVP attached to your invitations. However, you can estimate. If you have a large guest list, then you will want to keep your menu more simple. Reserve complex and fancy dinner preparations for smaller, more intimate affairs.

2. How will food be served or offered to guests?

Are you planning on having your guests seated and served? Or, do you want to keep things more casual and allow people to serve themselves from a buffet? The mood and theme of your party will often dictate how you choose to offer food to your invited friends and family. If you are giving a formal dinner party, you will definitely want to serve your guests. However, if it is a more informal, relaxed affair, then allowing guests to serve themselves is perfectly acceptable.

3. How much food and beverages will I need to have on hand?

An extremely important element of food party planning is to consider the quantities of food and drinks you should have available for your guests. You should plan on having an average of 5 appetizers per person. Also, keep in mind that people will drink about two beverages per hour, especially those of the alcoholic variety. For the actual meal, a pound and a half of food per person is adequate.

When engaging in food party planning, the above elements are important to keep in mind. Knowing the number of guests, the way to offer the food and the quantities of food and drinks to have available are all very important. With these pieces of information, your event is sure to be well planned and smoothly executed.
