Halloween Ideas - I have yet to this day to meet a kid that didn't jump for joy, or blurt out a high shrieking squeal when told they could go trick or treating on Halloween night. And why wouldn't they get excited over being allowed to dress up in freakish scary Halloween costumes, (ghoul, ghost, witch, black cat and toad outfits) and have their faces painted so they can scare the pants of people in the neighbourhood. Times have changed considerably since mom dressed her child up as a devil with horns, supplied him/her with a goody bag for treats, and waved her excited mischievous imp goodbye to go and do some spooking...knowing they were safe. Although trick or treating is still as popular ever, it's a worrying time for mom and dad. Parents now do the right thing and act as escorts to their children to protect them. Parents are aware of the dangers, and the real ghouls that lurk around on Halloween night just waiting to prey on innocent children.
Trick and Treat Awareness Tips
Never let your child go trick or treating alone. Even at an age you believe them to be responsible is not good enough. Insist your child travels from door to door in a group. Your child might be sensible, and ahead of their years, but being sensible doesn't always save lives. I don't mean to sound harsh but they need to be accompanied. This is a prime time and a passport for predators to pounce. No matter how quiet the neighborhood is you live in don't leave anything to chance. You may have trust in your neighbor, but murderers at some time will have been a neighbor to someone. As an adult you also need to take care.
Carry a flashlight/torch when you're entering dark areas. Kids need to see where they are going, as they might already be experiencing difficulty in walking in a big baggy Halloween costume as it is, also the benefit of carrying a torch allows you to be seen by other people and traffic. Glow sticks are ideal and add to the spooky atmosphere.
Purchase reflectors to place on your child's footwear or Halloween costume. This is a safe measure to take if your route involves crossing the road.
When you get home the kids are going to want to get stuck into their bag of treats, but check the content first. Look for things like the sell by date. Sweets and candy are usually given as a treat, so make sure the candy is not something a toddler could choke on. Also if the child has an allergy to nuts, then check for chocolate bars containing nuts or other.
Count how many children you have in the haunting group, and update the count at regular intervals.
If the children are carrying Halloween pumpkins explain of the dangers regarding the naked flame. Make sure the Halloween costume doesn't come in contact with the lighted candle inside.
Don't turn your back for a minute, or let the trick or treat gathering out of your sight. They say you need eyes in the back of your head when looking after kids. So it makes sense to walk behind the group. Young toddlers can be secured to your wrist with a safety band with length so that they can still roam with the others, but not run off. .Bring a baby buggy/pram in case any little ones tire of walking. Rum it into the children that they are not to enter any house whether their offered lemonade and biscuits.
If you see a house that's made an effort for Halloween night and has a pumpkin or other in the window then there may be some great treats in store for you. But there is a possibility that some people are not so welcoming because they don't celebrate this occasion, don't be disheartened just move on to the next house
Lay the law down with your kids that they are not to upset or annoy the people they visit. What's this got to do with keeping my child safe you ask? Put the shoe on the other foot and imagine you have pesky kid rile you, need I say more
If your child is travelling in a group, and without you present then make sure they carry their cell phone or have the house phone number in case of an emergency. Agree on a set time on your child returning home.

When shopping for creepy Halloween costumes, remember its kids that will be wearing them so make sure any fabrics, wigs and accessory labels state flame-resistant. If you see the CE European safety mark then go for the goods. If you're making homemade witches costumes using bin bag liners, or white sheets which are common for the ghost character with eye cut outs then consider safety at all times, which will include the length of the sheet to avoid trips and falls. Do not allow plastic bags to be worn over the head because of suffocation issues..
On walkabout the children will need to be comfortable and if their costume is too small or too tight, your child may not be able to move freely.
If you are making your own broomsticks then smooth off the wood to avoid the kids getting splinters.
Some masks may stop your child seeing properly so be vigilant, and be there eyes when crossing the road or driveways.
If the kids are tooled up with fake knives and swords to match their costume then you must make sure there soft and flexible, to prevent injury if they get mischievous and start play-fighting with another monster in the group.
Halloween Party Safety Tips
Think about fire safety when decorating your house: You are dealing with flames and darkness when catering for Halloween night.
- Overloading electrical sockets for extra lighting or special effects equipment is dangerous so avoid doing this.
- Allot a certain room for all to congregate to if a fire breaks out
- Keep lighted lanterns and candles away from curtains, decorations and flammable materials
- Keep your pets in a safe place, most animals do get excited, but unlike kids animals are feared
Before trick or treating, give your children a good healthy meal so they don't fill up on Halloween treats, which you might not have chance to check to make sure they are safe to eat.
If you're the donator on Halloween night then buy healthy treats like raisins, Satsuma's or oranges to give to the kids who visit your house, their moms will thank you for it. Get the fruit cheap by visiting the fruit market early where the delivery boy may have fruit over. No trick or treat event is the same without a pumpkin. Better improve the event with decorated pumpkins.
