We still hear about tea parties, tax parties, and the like as being so . . . anti-American, it's hard to grasp the fact there are other protests going on these days which are slipping through the cracks. It's hard to grasp because unlike the tea parties, these protesters are not waving flags or carrying signs such as 'Don't Tread On Me' or 'Liberty or Death'. To their credit, these other protesters are also not bringing guns as some of those did to the tea parties.

And speaking of bringing guns, of course we all know how MSNBC did its best to create news (as opposed to report) by showing a video of a man with an semi-auto strapped to his waist. The reporter did the best job announcing how 'racial tensions' were 'in the air', all the while not showing the man's face. Good thing, since the man with that particular gun and 'tension' was African-American.

So much for MSNBC.

The tea parties also had their share of nuts, which of course got the most press. These nuts brought signs with racial hatred and outright lies about health care, and of course the left painted the entire protest with one single racial brush. The right could have averted this by disowning these nuts, yet to their credit they didn't. I say to their credit since, right or wrong, if someone feels there is something wrong with their political leaders and feels strong enough about it, he or she should be able to vent. Of course, he or she also should be called out for it, but that's another article. I don't recall anyone getting hurt by a protester holding a sign or using a bullhorn.

So much for freedom of speech.

The protests at the G-20 summit in Pittsburgh get a pass because . . . well, I don't know, really. These protesters are against capitalism, apparently, and so to vent their discontent they burn cars and smash windows and try as hard as possible to disrupt society. To what end is your guess, since I can't figure it out. I fail to understand how breaking the windows of a KFC will bring about change in Washington, nor do I understand how burning cars in Pittsburgh (of all places) will bring about an end to capitalism. I also fail to understand why there is almost no coverage of these protests.

So much for reporting the news.

So. A word about protesting: If you want to practice your freedom of speech, don't bring an American flag. Don't bring signs calling upon your political leaders to do something, anything. Don't organize into groups and march on Washington. That's just unpatriotic. Do what they do in Pittsburgh: burn cars and smash windows and try as hard as you can to be a complete idiot with no concrete objective (sorry, but bringing about the end of capitalism is not the objective of these people: destruction and mayhem are). You might not get much coverage, but at least you won't be thought unpatriotic.

So much for irony.

This type of "they can't do that" entitlement reminds me of people getting so upset over Bret Favre retiring and the returning to work like they own his life. Who cares? And who cares what a minority fringe group is doing or saying as long as they aren't infringing on peoples' rights, but, as you mention, sometime it does get out of hand, but that's the free world for ya. These nuts have always been here and always will, that's what this country is about. Got to vent? Get out there and do it. Don't keep it in, for what happens in communist countries of the oppressed is the only choice: revolt. As long as these nuts are down on the farm (relatively speaking), let them blow off some steam. It's better that than them cooking some of us sane people up for an evening stew. (Hmmmmm, now that I think of it, sane people are a pretty tender and yummy delicacy. Maybe . . . ;=)

Thanks for the ever-levelheadedness you bring to this insane world. Peace!

I just don't understand the entitlement thing these days. Feeling entitled to a good table at a restaurant is one thing, feeling entitled to be able to practice anarchy is something else. Thanks as always for reading.

Yeah Mike, with all the problems in the world one would think we could find peaceful ways to bring about change.

I would think so as well. Ghandi did it, and MLK (for the most part) did it. Are people more impatient these days? Thanks for reading and commenting.

Good thoughts well written - I suspect that pretty soon the "silent majority" will not be silent any longer. Thanks for being a voice on these issues! Marijo

I don't know if there really is a silent majority any more. I think these days everyone wants to scream. Thanks for the input.

I know, we always see these burnings and similar protests and don't think twice. Maybe we should. Thanks as always.

The man carrying the gun was apparently doing so legally. So much for my planned vacation to Arizona, who needs it. I agree with MSNBC, carrying an assault-style weapon to a rally outside of where our President was giving a speech is a newsworthy event. I can't tell you what the FAUX spin was, but I'm guessing it was predictably pro-violence.

When a kid wore a t-shirt saying "Stop The War" to a Bush speech he was hustled out by the cops and the usual radio rabble accused him of treason. When did democracy go Taliban on us?
