Motion sickness is primarily caused by the disturbance of the inner ear by repetitive movement. This can cause nausea, vomiting or dizziness during car, bus, train, boat or plane rides. Here are some great tips to lessen and maybe even prevent motion sickness.
Be aware of what you eat within several hours of your trip. Stay away from thing that you know can sometimes disagree with your stomach. Also, any spicy or rich foods should be avoided. A very light snack is best although if past experience has shown you otherwise, avoid food altogether.
Seat yourself in a position that will have the least motion.
For a car ride sit in the front seat. Focus your eyes on the horizon and not on anything that is moving for example cars going the other way or markers and lines on the highway. Do not read in the car as this may make things worse.
On airplanes the best seat for those who experience motion sickness is in the middle. The seats right over the planes wings seems to be the calmest.
On a ship try to secure a cabin near the center and on one of the lower levels of the boat.
Facing backwards during any travel is also not recommended. Find a seat with the least movement and gaze at the horizon or the sky.
Stay away from anyone suffering the motion sickness. Talking and commensurating about your symptoms will not help. Also avoid any strong odors. Get plenty of fresh air.
Talk to your doctor about about medication that can help. Most people are very happy with over the counter pills like Dramamine but if you experience very severe motion sickness ask your doctor for something stronger like the patch.
Although most of these tips are common sense, keep them in mind right before a trip and it will turn out to be more pleasant.
