When the world turns black and gold
Then it's Halloween!
Nancy Byrd Turner It's the evening of October 31st., and the little ghosts and goblins are hop, skip and jumping around the neighborhood having a wonderful time. These are scary nights of mystery and fun they'll remember throughout their lives.
Of course, the youngsters always need parental protection, but extra precautions must implemented on Halloween night, to ensure that they'll return home at bedtime safe and sound.
SSome tips to make Halloween safe:
COSTUMES
* Make sure costumes are large enough to fit over winter clothes if the weather turns cold.
* Watch full skirts and loose sleeves around open candle flames.
* Make sure masks fit securely and have large holes for eyes, so as not to obstruct vision.
* Costumes, beards, wigs and other extras should made of flame-retardant material and hang no longer than mid-calf, to prevent tripping. Add reflective tape so the child will be visible to traffic.
* Swords, knives and other accessories should be of flexible material, in case of falls.
DECORATIONS
* The child may draw the face on the pumpkin, but an adult should do the actual carving.
* Instead of a candle, put a small flashlight inside the jack-o-lantern.
* Move lawn decorations and other objects away from the pathway to the front door, to prevent tripping.
* Keep the outdoor light on.
* Keep pets shut in another room during "Trick-or-treat" time.
TRICK OR TREATING
* Young children should be accompanied by an adult.
* Older children should travel in groups.
* Each child should carry a flashlight.
* They should stay in their own neighborhood and only go to well-lit houses.
* They must stay on the sidewalks, not run onto the road, and only cross at corners, after looking both ways.
* They must not take shortcuts through backyards or dark alleys, or enter dark houses or cars.
* Children should have dinner before going out so they won't be hungry. They must bring all treats home for parental inspection before eating.
CHECKING CANDY
* Throw out candy or treats which are unwrapped or appear to have been tampered with.
* Wash all fresh fruit. Check for holes or small punctures. Cut fruit open before allowing children to eat it.
* For small children, remove choking hazards such as nuts, gum, hard candies, small toys or toys with removable parts.
By following these simple precautions, Halloween will be a safe and enjoyable experience for the entire family.
