People often turn to eBay to find products they want for cheap including cell phones. Ask yourself why you need to make a cell phone purchase from eBay. Are you trying to find a cell phone that's replacing another that's under contract or will you use it with a new contract? Are you looking to upgrade and save money? When you want a used cell phone in lieu of a new phone or contract, going the eBay auction route may be a good idea. Before you make this purchase, mull over four important things about eBay and cell phones.

First, consider the eBay seller and their reputation. Is the person selling the used or refurbished cell phone as an individual or a business seller? Does their eBay reputation/feedback correspond with being a cell phone seller? If the seller is an individual selling a used cell phone, determine why they are selling it. If there isn't a lot of information provided in the bid and the auction is over in minutes, it's best to let it go even if the used cell phone is cheap. It may not be worth it.

Second, be wary with refurbished cell phones with no SIM card. CDMA phones use the serial numbers to tie the phone to a particular service provider, not a SIM card. For instance, you choose to purchase a CDMA phone; if the refurbished Sprint cell phone has a balance remaining or it's been reported stolen/lost, you may have a difficult time getting that phone activated with your service provider. If, however, your phone has a SIM card, this can easily be replaced with a new card and activated in your name... with no difficulties.

Third, it's wise not to buy a phone that's "unlocked". Most cell phones are geared toward a certain company so the phone stays locked for that specific carrier. Unlocked phones tend to have problems with various features such as downloading your favorite ringtones or establishing the phone's Internet applications. Be sure your phone carrier will work with the phone you choose.

Lastly, any phone you choose to purchase from an eBay seller should have a return policy. Most eBay sellers have no intention of ripping off their customers; with this in mind, find a seller who has a sensible return policy in case there are problems with the phone. Should you feel the need to return the phone, email the seller and kindly explain the issue. By being nice, you can ensure a smooth and pleasant transaction.
