When shopping for an aquarium stand, there will be several things to consider. Believe it or not, an aquarium weighs about ten pounds for every gallon of water. So your aquarium, once filled with water, will be quite heavy. Any stand you put your aquarium on will have to be able to withstand that weight. So keep that in mind and don't think that you will be able to put that new aquarium anywhere - like on a table or a bookcase, because it may break under all that weight.

A general rule of thumb is that you will require a stand if your aquarium is 20 gallons or more. Sometimes, when you buy the stand with the aquarium, you can get a better deal and be sure the two pieces match. Some brands of aquariums come with an integrated stand, so you could choose that option.

Depending on whether your tank is made of acrylic or glass, you may need different kind of support. Acrylic has to be supported along the full length and width of the bottom. Glass has to be supported only by the outside edges.

Besides supporting the tank, aquarium stands also provide storage space for you supplies. That's an essentialaspect of your decision-making process when purchasing a tank - it will help you organize your daily tasks surrounding your fish keeping. You will be spared the unavoidable mess of accessories and products laying around all over the place.

Since depending on the size of your aquarium, the stand may end up taking quite a bit of room, you want it to be an attractive addition to your living space as well. Just as aquariums are becoming more and more attractive, so can aquarium stands be very stylish and enhance the look of your home.

Very often stands are manufactured for each individual aquarium model and they will be made of material matching the trim of the aquarium. Don't neglect that fact when buying an aquarium stand. Even though it may be a minor detail, it will add to the overall look.
