Do you know the difference between having health insurance and not having insurance? That sounds like a silly question, but many people don't know the implications of living with or without insurance. A lot of folks have the attitude that insurance is for senior citizens or little kids. If you are young and healthy you don't need insurance. Right?
Without sounding like the vision of doom, you can't be certain of what accidents and issues will affect your financial stability adversely. Everyone at some point will end up at the hospital sooner or later and getting your insurance before this happens is a smart move.
After you have left the cozy nest of your parents you will be without insurance. Probably for the first time in your life. This is when people make the mistake of thinking that they can wait on getting their own health insurance plan. They think that because they are really young that they have plenty of time to get that later, maybe they will get a great job that comes with insurance and they will never have to worry with it. All it will take is one short hospital visit to change that opinion. It could be as simple as slipping down on some wet concrete and one little broken arm will put you in a financial mess.
Have you even been to the emergency room? Maybe as a child with your parents. If you have yet to see a full bill from a hospital visit then you are in for a big surprise. And this will not be a happy surprise either. If you are being a good friend and helping your buddy move you may have nothing more to look forward to than some pizza and beer later. If you accidentally have the refrigerator dropped on your foot while walking it out of the house it will hurt more than your little foot bones or toes. If that foot has some broken bones and tendon damage you will probably be getting some quick surgery. Now you have a bill that includes a surgeon, and anesthesiologist, overnight care and all those other little extras.
You will save yourself from some serious hospital bills if you get yourself some health coverage before you have an injury or even a surprise illness. The monthly premium is much more affordable than the alternative.
