October 5-9 is Fire Prevention Week across the nation. Preschool is a great time to celebrate and bring that knowledge into the classroom.

Discussing Fire Prevention throughout the classroom can offer fun educational experiences for preschoolers. Here are some activities for centers in your classroom.

Drama
Drama is probably the easiest center to plan for during this week. Pull out the fireman costumes, flashlights, and hoses. If you can, draw a firehouse on a refrigerator box. Go to the local hardware store for donations. Also, add stuffed dalmatians to the center for the kids to truly enjoy pretending to be firemen.

Art
Dalmatian-print out a blank picture of a dog. Allow the kids to place black fingerprints on the dog to make a dalmatian.
Painting at the easel-Place red paint at the easel along with a paintbrush. Have the children draw a fire truck. Place a picture on the wall by the area for them to look at. You will love seeing what they create.
Painting with fire trucks-Gather matchbox size and bigger fire trucks. Have the kids roll the cars in paint, then roll across the pictures. The kids will love their creations.
Tissue paper-Print out a fire truck coloring sheet. Have the kids tear red tissue paper into little pieces. Then allow them to glue it on the sheet.

Books
There are several really good books that are perfect for Fire Prevention Week. Here are my favorite that I use in my class: Stop Drop and Roll by Margery Cuyler; Firefighters A to Z by Chris L. Demarest and Curious George and the Firefighters by H.A. Rey.

Blocks
Add fire trucks to the block center. Bring out red lego blocks and have the kids build a firehouse. If you have the funds, add firemen action figures or wooden block firemen.

Outside game
Use washable paint to paint flames on butcher paper. Pin to the wall or fence outside. Mix a solution of mild soap and water in a spray bottle. Allow the kids to spray the fence and make the "fire run."

Plan a visit
Firemen love to visit schools and tell about what they do. Call the local fire station and schedule a field trip or have them come to your school. Be sure to have the cameras ready. They also leave many goodies for the kids in the form of coloring books and stickers.

These are just a few suggestions to get you started. Feel free to leave more in the comment section below.
