No matter how many Zippo lighters you own, you'll need to know how to change that flint. One of the drawbacks to using a flint lighter is the fact that the flint wears out through use. Knowing how to change the flint will make the entire process go more smoothly. How do you change the flint in your lighter? What steps must you follow to ensure that you do the job correctly? Below, you'll find a helpful guide.

Step One: The very first thing that you'll need to do is to remove the insert from the outer case. This is done by sliding the outer case down, just as if you were going to refill the lighter fluid. Take care during this process so that you do not damage your lighter.

Step Two: Unscrew the flint tube/spring assembly from the bottom of the inner insert. You will need a small flathead screwdriver or a similar tool (a dime will work) to do this.

Step Three: Remove the screw from the insert and make sure that the attached spring comes free of the insert, as well. Make sure that you do not bend or damage the spring during this operation.

Step Four: Check the flint tube to make sure that there is no flint remaining in it. If you find flint fragments, remove them now. Never add new flint if there are fragments in the tube.

Step Five: Put the new flint into the tube. Make sure that you do not damage the flint, the tube or the spring (the spring should be off at this point) during this part of the process.

Step Six: Now, gently replace the spring on the tube assembly, taking care not to bend the spring.

Step Seven: The entire screw/spring/tube assembly should be slid back into the inner insert now. Tighten the retaining screw firmly, but do not over tighten it. Over tightening the screw can lead to damage and might prevent removal in the future.

Step Eight: Replace the inner insert into the outer case. If the case does not fit properly, make sure that the flint tube screw is fully tightened.

Youve now replaced the flint in your Zippo; as you practice this process, you will find that it becomes simpler and simpler to accomplish and that you can finish it in a matter of mere minutes (or seconds, even!)
