Most walleye or pickerel fisherman who fish on large open lakes and reservoirs normally will use 16 to 18 foot boats with a deep v hull design. A good bait fisherman for walleye motor would be between 25 to 75hp when you use a 16 to 18 deep v designed boat. On very large lakes such as Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, Lake Superior, and Lake Ontario most walleye and pickerel anglers use a large 25 to 30 foot long Deep V designed hull because of weather safety issues. If you fish for walleye and pickerel on the great lakes you need to be able to move quickly away from fast moving storms, or be able to ride a storm out.

For smaller lakes and rivers a 14 foot semi deep v designed boat will work fine when your bait fishing for walleye and pickerel. Small 14 foot boats with 10 to 15 hp motors have been used to catch more walleye and pickerel then any other boat and motor combinations.

You can use flat bottom or a tri hull or other low profile hull designs on small to medium lakes and rivers but do not use them on large open water lakes. These types of boats do not operate well in storms because they do not cut well through large waves that can develop in stormy weather conditions.

Many walleye and pickerel fisherman use aluminum boats because they are lighter , more durable and less expensive. Then fiberglass boats. Fiberglass boats may be heavier and more expensive but the have their advantages. Fiberglass boats run quieter through the water and they do not leak as often as aluminum boats.

Small boats with motors under 25 hp work great for bait fishing for walleye and pickerel because you need to be able to move very slow either in a forward or back troll operation. Motors over 25 hp can adjust their speed slow enough to perform these boating operations.

If you are a serious walleye and pickerel angler then you also need to have some of the following accessories. These accessories would include such items as a tiller for boat control, a depth fish finder, a transom mounted electric trolling motor with a bow mounted foot control for when you are bait fishing by casting lures for walleye, and a GPS. Sometimes these accessories can make or break a good fishing trip so keep them in mind.

Well folks that concludes my article about walleye and pickerel boats , motors and accessories. We wish you all the luck in the world on your next fishing trip! Have a nice day.
